Hi! I can't afford many G1 figures, he'll, I can barely afford one! But I will manage to get just one for my collection, and I wanted to know, what's the best G1 figure? I can only get one, so I gotta make it great!

I'd probably go with the classic: Optimus Prime. He's a pretty nice robot and not a total brick like a lot of G1 bots, and you have the trailer to go with it too. Looks great in a display in either mode. Alternatively, you could get Ultra Magnus, which may be a better toy if you prefer the trailer turning into a big robot instead of the repair bay thing.

I'd vote any of the original 84-85 cars. They're smaller than you'd expect but all solid. Prowl, Bluestreak, Smokescreen, Mirage, Hound....all great imo.

My favorite is Prowl, but only the original 84/85 one, not the reissue which has mold issues on the face.

Otherwise, Powermaster Optimus Prime is great and he's been reissued so he's not that bad price wise.

Edit: Can't forget about Grimlock. But he's never been officially reissued, only KO'd. But a loose complete one isn't too expensive.

If you're only able to get one G1 toy might as well go big and get the biggest one of them all - Fortress Maximus! Yeah there's a Titans Return modern update out now, but the old toy is more fun to be honest, with numerous play features and accessories and durable as all heck!

My personal favorites are Soundwave and Kickback. If you could only get one I would suggest Kickback. That figure has head articulation, slight elbow bend, and legs that can go forward and backwards.

Plus being smaller it wouldn't take up too much space and could probably save you some money too.

IMHO, the original Optimus Prime or Jetfire were the best TFs I owned as a kid. They are some of the few that I've gone out of my way to re-collect (?) as an adult.

I'd honestly say Optimus. He is by far the pinnacle of what G1 could be.

    Also Triggerhappy ?
Depends on what you look for in a toy, and at what price.
If you want lots of playvalue i think you gotta go with one of the big boys:
Optimus, Megatron, Ultra Magnus, Doubledealer, a citybot...

Metroplex has always been my personal fav, but there are several decent ones. Dinobots are all pretty good. The cars are good but not as good as the dinobots. Best alt mode might be megatron, but his robot mode is a mess.

When I think of objectively best figure in terms of alt mode, robot mode, playability, etc it's gotta go to soundwave. Impressively put together figure all around.

Either Jetfire or the original Optimus Prime.

Interestingly, Shouji Kawamori was involved in both designs, even though Jetfire was originally a Macross figure.

I'd go for G1 Hot Rod because of it's exceptionally fun, satisfying and repeatable transformation, superb looks and iconic nature. Jetfire is a very very close second for me.

I agree with those who say:
    - Optimus Prime: possibly the best of the G1 Diaclone designed figures,
    - Jetfire: just a very good Transforming robot
    - Hot Rod: probably the most fun and well designed post-diaclone Transformer

So many fun Transformers, but agree with others ... if you're literally only buying one ever, gotta be Optimus Prime. I'd probably suggest a reissue so you can have a mint copy for display!!
