Hi all. I've recently started to really like Superman, so I want to get a comic or two. But I'm looking for a comic that is on par with Green Lantern's Blackest Night or Batman's Arkham Asylum.

In other words, what is/are THE BEST Superman comic books?

"For the Man who Has Everything" was great, was that included in Whatever Happened to The Man Of Tomorrow?

    My picks:

    - DC Universe: The Stories of Alan Moore (TPB) - Includes "For the Man Who Has Everything" and "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?", two of the best and most well-known Superman stories. Also has a bunch of other good stuff.
    - Kingdom Come
    - Death of Superman/Funeral for a Friend/Reign of the Supermen
    - The Black Ring - Technically a Lex Luthor story, but Superman shows up at the end.
    - Man of Steel - John Byrne's origin miniseries for Superman immediately post-Crisis.

I can't believe no one has mentioned secret Identity by Busiek. It's NOT about the main stay Superman, but it tells a great story that spans the entirety of A Superman's life; although, it might not be your cup of tea it you're only interested in the mainstream Supes.

I'd also like to echo a few other posters comments about All Star Superman.

I have to say that one of the best recent Superman stories was Geoff Johns run on Action Comics when Gary Frank was on art. There was a Legion and Braniac story. There was also a very good Bizarro story by Richard Donner.

I liked the Superman and Legion tv show. I just didn't see the point of having Superman with the Legion in Action Comics without his powers. Just a promo for LSH the way I look at it right now.

Yeah, Secret Identity is phenomenal. But it's not about the super-hero character I think the OP is asking about.

But yeah, definitely check out Secret Identity.

What are the best Batman/Superman books that haven't been adapted into a movie?

That hasn't been adapted? Well, I really liked Absolute Power. It would be the next to be adapted, if they were going in order, but I kind of doubt that one will ever get made. It also had phenomenal art by Carlos Pacheco.

Well, of the ones on my shelf:

All-Star Superman (this is one any comic fan should own)
Superman: Earth One (an interesting read, certainly Superman but not as most know him)
Superman/Batman - Public Enemies and Supergirl from Krypton arcs
Kingdom Come (one of the great classics of DC, worth owning for the art alone)

    All-star Superman
    Kingdom Come
Superman/Batman - Public Enemies and Supergirl for sure, some of teh others are really good as well.

And has been said as well, Secret Identity is amazing even if it's not the Superman you're thinking of.

I'll toss my hat with Kingdom Come. Which sorta isn't a Superman book, but it totally is.

I'll also suggest Red Son. A case of Superman working despite the inverted setting 'cause at heart, he's still Superman.

Up, Up and Away! was also pretty good from what I remember. I remember thinking it's what the Brandon Routh movie should have been. I'm probably the only one who isn't particularly impressed with All-Star Superman though. I liked it, but nothing's blown my mind like Kingdom Come.

Damn, I totally forgot about Red Son. It's a great read, as long as you're okay with reading about an Elseworlds Soviet Superman.

    This.

You don't even expect it, then bam!, you suddenly can't see because of all the tears in your eyes.

Krypto is such a good dog.

I don't know about books but I like that one story line where Mongul glue that tentacle thing to Superman's chest.
