You should read the book, it's short. Arthur C. Clark.

Blade Runner, awesome multi-layered movie with spectacular production and a bunch of great folks bringing thier A-game to the table.

2001 is a draw your own conclusion movie, I woulden't even take the book as gospel for the movie since Kubrik and Clarke basically made thier own versions of the same thing at the same time.

Neither are suitable for folks that need to be spoonfed thougth.

Blade Runner is great. The lighting in that movie is just amazing, with all of the ships shining their lights into the buildings.

Alien should also be mentioned, because of the 'used' feeling of the technology, and the realistic crew complaing about their pay and food. Great acting in that movie.

i wouldn say i need to be spoonfed stuff but its been a long tiem since i watched any part of that film, maybe with fresh eyes i would have a better appreciation, i bought blade runne ron the sole reason everyone says how good it is, and i have tried three times, and just cant stay with it to the end, just doesnt grab me in the slightest which makes me sad lol

I'm not the type to be spoonfed either, and I didn't know what the hell was going on at the end of 2001.

    SPOILER..................

What happens is the main character is sent on a journey through the history of the universe through the eyes of the Star Child, which is another term for an alien. He is then sent back to earth to inform the rest of the world.

It was well written in the book, but very hard to reproduce on film, so Kubrick took some liberties. In the book, the guy sees ancient space stations devoid of life, and a bunch of other really cool stuff.

The Black Monolith is like what the U.S. satellite that contained our best music, art, and literature. I forget the name. It's still out there, beyond the Solar System, now. I'm not sure if we still have contact.

Dark City. Beautiful cinematography and it does the "life isn't what it seems" motif far better than the much more popular Matrix movies.

    Cool soudns awesome actually.
I'm a big fan of the grounded sci-fi like the ones where you see it an its eitehr in our worl or could be where we end up, like aliens as the guy above said, they're just regular people not starfleet commanders an stuff.

but having said that although not a movie, amss effect for the xbox360 is probably one of the best sci fi things i have ever seen, my bro played it much more than me so i watched more and its so epic feeling and a vast universe cant wait for it to be explored more and would be amazing for a movie version

Get your hands on a copy of Planetes if you can, awesome anime series about near-future space exploration and the various issues it raises.

I'm gonna have to go with Blade Runner as well.

While I enjoy 2001, it just isn't that entertaining. I can sit down and watch Blade Runner on a sunday afternoon when I have nothing to do. I can't do that with 2001.

Big props to Event Horizon though. One of my favorite horror sci-fi movies.
