Pirates of the Caribbean has had some excellenent theme music. Always loved that score... Star Wars can be very good, but I don't like all of it. Lord of the Rings is just amazing. And while it might just be the fanboy in me talking, I like alot of the score from the Transformers movies.

The podcast Geekistry just did an episode about this, the hosts came up with their top 10 movie soundtracks from the last 10 years.

Some of mine have to include Transformers (07), Tron: Legacy, and Star Wars. Oh, and the theme to The Last Starfighter.

Anything by John Williams for Star Wars is amazing (hell, anything by John Williams period is amazing.) Alan Silvestri for Back to the Future is awesome, Hanz Zimmer is also amazing (Gladiator, Last Samurai , recent Batman films), Bill Conti for Rocky and original Karate Kid films (love the score for Karate Kid). Gotta love Jerry Goldsmith for the original Rambo films, Alien, AND for The Omen (awesome work). Philip Glass for the Candyman films and The Illusionist (I heard the music for The Illusionist and was able to guess it was him, awesome stuff). I think I covered all my bases? Music is a big part of my life, so I had to include more than just one...or two....or three. :D

I'm not sure if it's just nostalgia, but John Williams's works always capture a certain spirit of the film on an especially personal level. Listen to Jurassic Park theme and it goes beyond "that was a good movie", it rekindles that childhood obsession with dinosaurs. Superman makes you want to be a hero, Indiana Jones makes you want to explore ancient temples, E.T. makes you want to find aliens, etc.. Other themes, as great and iconic as they are, never strike those kind of chords.

...even though it runs counter to my rambling above, I'm posting Mars Attacks! because I'd be lying if I said I didn't love it.
