After posting that video found on youtube in another thread it had a song called forever young. Turns out there are 2 more 80s songs called that also! (more in the 90s but we will stick to 80s) There are three songs I could find called forever young from the 80s. So the question is--Which one is the best? Here are the three. Rod stewert Alphaville Carol Parks 80s cheese aside what song was the best? I grew up with the rod stewert version. Never heard of the second but has a good but cheesy 80s beat. Third is about remembering your childhood as a adult and people you knew so it's kind of sad. Which one wins?
Rod Stewart then maybe Alphaville. You say Forever Young and instantly Rod Stewart plays in my head (or the Mel Gibson film)
Definitely not the female version, I don't think I've ever heard that version before, but the other 2, heard at least a thousand times.
CAUTION: DON'T PLAY ALL 3 AT THE SAME TIME.!.!!! IT WILL UNLOCK SOME CREATURE FROM THE DEPTHS OF HELL!!.!!
There are 20 artists on my list of people who, if I'm working in the attic and their song comes on the radio in the basement, I'll walk down three flights of stairs just to shut it off. Rod Steward is pretty damn high on that list. Not as high as Tom Petty, but pretty damn high.
As a kid in the 80s I grew up with the rod stewert version. I'm a "soft rock" person (but do love some rock and roll also) so tom petty and rod stewert are two I grew up on. Never heard of Alphaville. Looked them up and other then this song their biggest hits are "big in japan" and "dance with me". Also this song is kind of a anti-forever young as the other to songs talk about being forever young it says "who would want to be forever young?" "Would you really want that?" It's a weird song. Big in japan is just as strange after watching it. Had to do some digging on the last song and it turns out it's from a odd sourse. Like "who let the dogs out" is from rugrats and "run with us" is from raccoons and the lost star, this song is from---care bears movie 2! (really!) More surprising is it gained a cult following with fan remakes on youtube and in the comments on the video I posted are tons of people crying over the song! Turns out it reminds them of loved ones they lost or their childhood! On a sad note looks like the singer carol parks has passed away a few years ago.
Alphaville is a German band and really, really good, in my opinion. The song is really about wanting eternal youth, one of the lyrics is "let us die young or let us live forever," suggesting the author fears aging, and particularly feels the stress of living under the threat of nuclear war ("we're only watching the skies / hoping for the best, but expecting the worst / are you gonna drop the bomb or not?").* Later he says "it's so hard to get old without a cause / I don't want to perish like a fading horse." And in the chorus he says "I want to be forever young." Man, I'm gonna queue it up right now. *Nuclear apocalypse is a recurring theme in several of their songs, queue up "Summer Rain," off the top of my head.
Rod Stewart's version is my favorite. Though, when dealing with our own life, and handling old age, etc, I was more a fan of Mike and the Mechanics' Living Years.
I've been into Alphaville since the 80's, so... Alphaville. By miles. Not just because I like them and loathe Stewart, but because it just IS the superior version. Yup.
Man, I love this guy. You find negativity in everything. I'm being honest when I say I think you are funny, in a good way.
The only Rod I'd throw a parade for is the inanimate carbon variety that saves space missions. As for Alphaville, that song is easily one of my favourite 80's pop tunes in existence.
They're all great songs, but Carol Parks wins it for me. I love that song. Its sweet, beautiful and dreamy. Brings fond memories of my childhood. @ILoveDinobot This version is from Care Bears the Movie II.
Alphaville was played at every school dance i went to...so for all those close, sweet slow dances with cute girls now long gone i have to go with them with much thanks.
