...100 years ago today in 1914. Though quite unpopular even among his "allies", the assassination of both he and his wife in Sarajevo eventually creates a domino effect among nations and people who had been on edge with each other for decades, if not longer. Old hostilities are eventually let lose as one nation after another enacts treaties which lead to "The Great War", World War I:

The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, 100 Years Ago

It was like he was meant to die (if you believe there is a reality behind "fate," which I personally do). The rational explanation is that someone in the motorcade was in on the coo, but even still how would they know Princip would be standing there at that particular spot? Crazy!

This. The treaty of Versailles left very both Germany and Italy unhappy and helped create conditions in Germany ripe for Hitler's ascent to power.

Still the death of one man led to the deaths of millions more and the fall of empires and the rise of new nations and Communism.

Number six on my list of "to-do's" if I ever gain the ability to traverse time, stop his assassination, then observe history continue in a different direction, and see how the world would've been without WW1.

A truely historically significant event. It's a shame most people these days aren't aware of it.

If you didn't like the way the world turned out without a world war, would you go back to kill the archduke?

Without Archduke Franz Ferdinand being killed their would be no World War 1 (Well not the WWI we know) which means no World War 2 which means no Cold War which means American society from 1945-present would be dramatically different. The world would now where be close to what it is today without this one guy getting killed.

I don't think it would have made that much difference in the bigger picture if the assassination hadn't have happened. The entire continent was ready to explode thanks to decades of military build up combined with conflicting strategic interests, internal problems and general resentment. If it wasn't this, something else would have been used as an excuse to set it all on fire.

    Not quite.

In the big picture of things, the assassaination of the archduke was just the trigger, the final straw of mounting tensions between countries. Had he not been killed, something else would have happened that would ignite the fuse on the bomb that had been pre-WWI Europe. It was similar conditions of a sort which allowed Hitler to ride public sentiment all the way to being the leader of Germany and establish the Third Reich, because if he hadn't, somebody else would have appealed to popular sentiment and done the same thing.

Thats why I said "Well not the WWI we know". WWI could still have happened but there could be some differences then what did happened.

Really this is the death that changed the world. The course of the 20th century wouldn't have flowed without it.

:rip  Archduke. You deserve more remembrance for the changing the world.

    This.

The seeds for eventual war can (arguably) be traced as far back to the 1870s with Otto Von Bismarck "engineering" the Franco-Prussian War, and subsequent treaties put in place in the years following its aftermath.
