I think I have to disagree here. There is plenty of expression and body language in those panels of The Gathering and I have no issues whatsoever deciphering what characters may be thinking. Razorbeast and Lio Convoy are not just standing there like statues; or preparing to fight each other; they are obviously engaged in civil conversation, and the dialog bubbles confirm that is exactly what they are doing. They don't even have mouths, but you can tell by their body language that they are conversing with each other. It's not the most exciting panel, but it conveys exactly what it's supposed to. A lot can be expressed with subtle facial contortions, body language, and atmosphere without having to resort to turning a mouth sideways or raising an eyebrow to the top of one's head. Exaggerated expressions have the danger of over-expressing an emotion for the moment or just conveying the wrong emotion altogether, and can come across as comical when it was perhaps not supposed to be. But maybe Beast Wars Ongoing is supposed to be funny? I, for one, am not amused. This last panel you referenced that apparently has character in them, I am going to give you the benefit of a doubt and assume that you were only talking about Megatron and Dinobot. I have already sounded off about Dinobot's boring face in a different thread, but what exactly are Scorponok, Skold, and Terrorsaur meant to be conveying? Is Scorponok day-dreaming? Spaced out? He's just standing there in a neutral stance with a flat expression on his face. His mouth is literally a flat line. What about Skold? I couldn't tell you what she's thinking. Her face looks completely blank and she's not showing any body language. I have no idea what Terrorsaur's squiggle-mouth is supposed to mean. That's not even a natural expression, exaggerated or otherwise. This is an honest question, because I may just be unfamiliar with this style, but is squiggle-mouth supposed to translate to a real human expression? Is it supposed to mean dissatisfaction or something? Edit: And by the way, the less-than-impressive activity of Scorponok, Skold, and Terrorsaur has nothing to do with the writing (at least I hope that wasn't in the storyboards). There is no reason for them to just be standing there. Dinobot is clearly prepared to battle, so the Predacons should be as well. Show them in a state of combat readiness. Or perhaps they are unimpressed with Dinobot's posturing since they have strength in numbers, in which case show them looking relaxed, or bored, or folding their arms. Show them doing something other than nothing.
