The way I always saw it was Terrorsaur thinks he's a Starscream, but he's far too stupid to actually pose any meaningful threat to Megatron's position. (To be fair, Starscream was an idiot in the G1 cartoon as well, but like... so was everyone else, so it kind of balances out.) Tarantulas, on the other hand, is an actual Starscream type, and far more patient, methodical, and cunning than ol' Screamer ever was.

Tarantulas is the Shockwave, which is more less what you actually just described. Terrorsaur is definitely the Starscream. Starscream was never a threat to Megatron either, until the universe handed it to him (in the '86 movie). Exactly the same as Terrorsaur, who actually did defeat Megatron when the universe handed him the power to do so. It just didn't last.

The real question is which G1 bot was the Waspinator. Because you know there was one, somewhere.

Dirge. Dirge dies at least once in every single continuity he ever shows up in, but he had it the worst in the cartoon.

Terrorsaur in greek mythology is the fool who dreams to be king, his tragic flaw is ultimately incompetence. Waspinator on the other end is a king's fool. Endearing, incompetent and loyal-ish.

I view G1 as creating all the character archetypes later transformers cartoons would use in one form or another. Granted you have to read through a lot of toy and comic bios to find them. Later series do better expand or refine certain character types. As a Predacon Dinobot (The Honorable Warrior character) would be the Bludgeon or Sixshot.

BW though is unique in that it evokes Generation Xerox.

To figure out all the character archetypes I actually made a list of all their character/personality traits. Of course not all characters are one-note and there is plenty of overlap. Snapdragon is both a Slob (Lazy, Slovenly) and a Hothead (Hair-Trigger Temper/Anger) for example. The idea is every character has at least one personality trait that is uniquely theirs (and has a noun that describes that particular personality trait so I have something to call them). Its the thing that drives them above all else. Of course a Megalomaniac/Tyrant and an Egomaniac/Braggart are both driven by their egos. Albeit one is Power-Hungry and wants to take over the world while the other is more of an attention seeker or glory hog.

"Galavar" isn't a bad name at all, but it instantly makes my mind go to Gavilar Kholin from the Stormlight Archive.

Which considering how much recent books have taught us about the latter's god complex, is actually quite an apt comparison.

David Kaye needs to voice him whenever they get around to adapting the books for animation, I feel like that's inevitable.

So if Terrorsaur = Starscream, Tarantulas = Shockwave, G1 Megatron = BW Megatron who would be Soundwave\'s BW counterpart  Scorpinok or someone else?

Tbh Tarantulas isn't really Logic-driven/Emotionless enough to be Shockwave. He's a creepy sadist, a cannibalistic serial killer, his treatment of BA in season 2 was domestic abuse. The only thing they really have in common is both are Mad Scientists. In that case I'd say Tarantulas is a cross between Mixmaster (mad scientist) and Pounce (a sadist that does the dirty jobs even other 'Cons shy away from).

Scorponok in terms of role would be Soundwave with his Cyberbee in place of the Cassettes. Albeit, a Soundwave Wannabe in the same way Terrorsaur is a Starscream Wannabe.
In terms of personality? I consider him more of a G1 Scavenger.

Nonsense. They are both lone wolf schemers who will play along with Megatron when it suits them, but mostly just want to focus on their experiments. Both believe their faction would be better off with them in charge, and both are probably capable of actually toppling Megatron if they really wanted to. But neither really cares to lead, and so they spend most of their time focusing on their own ends.

Just because one is cold and the other manic doesn't mean they don't conform to the same archetype.

We do have a Season 1 episode where Scorponok was beating the piss out of Dinobot for about 10 seconds (ref. Dark Designs). Dinobot throws his sword at him, Scorponok jumps on him and just punches the heck out of him.

I get the impression the original plan was Scorponok was going to be the Predacon's Cheetor-- the dumb punk kid. Except like every other episode the writers did something else with him so he kind of wore all kind of hats throughout season 1 (to the point where he actually had a tech lab) and only consistently came off as a bootlicking grunt (which is basically the role Quickstrike inherited, only they had him carry out an actual betrayal arc when they got around to using him).

I think that's oversimplifying their relationship. They were never really a thing except for some really surface level stuff, she'd try to use her wiles and charm on him but it never really had the amount of success I'm figuring she hoped it would.

He viewed her as his creation, his property, rather than a girlfriend or whatever.

Amusingly, we recently learned from Hasbro documentation posted to the Internet that early development assigned the "Shockwave" trademark to Scorponok.

So I’ve preordered the 1st issue and am about to preorder the 2nd. I’m hoping to collect all the covers so correct me if I’m wrong but so far there’s 4 covers for issue 1, 2 covers for issue 2? And 3 covers for issue 3?

You misunderstand me they had similar roles yes, but in terms of personality Shockwave is a Logician while Tarantulas is a Sadist.

I haven't read comics since the early days of IDW but I'll probably give this a shot. The Gathering will be hard to top but with Kingdom hitting shelves my BW nostalgia is at an all time high and I need more. I'm hoping to see the Fossilizers show up at some point.
