Has Michael Bay ever shared / explained his reasoning for the design/look of the transformers in the movies?

I dunno about Bay, but I'm sure the guys who actually designed the robots have said a thing or two.

How about: "Segmented fragments of metal combined into a humanoid, or other, shape, leads to a more realistic portrayal of alien technology."
Seriously... yes, the Live Action Transformer movies look skeleton-y and whatnot, but if they didn't? They just wouldn't look realistic. Or they wouldn't BE realistic, regardless of how they look.
Remember... anything else, and there would be no plausible way they could transform into a vehicle with a working interior.

He's said he didn't want them to look clunky. These are alien races so they have to look advanced. They have to have moving parts.

Because it's more realistic than blocky looking robots.

Yes, so advanced even humans, a species which often has to be reminded by signs in public bathrooms to wash their hands after wiping their asses, are capable of destroying them, even though they are 30 foot tall mechanical monstrousities capable of physics defying agility and rapid firing energy projectiles... just saying...

I'm glad they don't look like their G1 counterparts. By not doing that, they allowed the designers to have room to think of countless possibilities. Take Demolisher and Rampage for instance. I love how they didn't use traditional legs for these characters. What they chose to do for them worked perfectly for the type of characters they are.

The only thing I can remember Bay saying about the designs is that he talked a bit about the flames on Prime's truck mode around the time of the first film.

I'd like to know how involved Bay actually is with the design process. I vaguely recall some interview were Bay said he more or less just let the design team go nuts and picked the best for the movie... but teams like the Constructicons and Wreckers seem like they had to work with a given plot. Obviously there can be a mix of "must-haves" and "whatever the artists feel like"s, but still I'd love to get an art book that tells us how the process went down.

"I just didn't want to make the boxy characters. It's boring and it would look fake. By adding more doo-dads and stuff on the robots, more car parts, you can just make it more real."

Transformers (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
and its also found on an MTV page.

    Sounds about right. :)

Agreed. I know for me, I've always liked when new things were actually new things, rather than attempts at a recreation. I mean, it's never going to become like the original, so why limit yourself to something that's doomed to fail regardless?
