The Watchmen movie is alright. The graphic novel is awesome but the movie is a straight adaptation (give or take, without spoiling) which kinda misses the point.

It looks nice but is a fairly hollow experience. A typical Snyder movie, really. You know you're in trouble when it starts with a slo-mo martial arts fight.

A Thesis on Man of Steel (Final) - YouTube

Just discovered this insightful video essay. It's actually pretty incredible. I already loved Man of Steel, but I respect Zack Snyder a bit more after seeing this

The comic book was great because it worked for how comic books were at the time. If it was made today I'm not sure if it would be a blip on the radar, but for it's time it was something that managed to shine for the questions it wanted to explore.

The straight up adaptation for film just doesn't work as good. Comic book had changed too much since the Watchmen comic book and it couldn't find a way to stab at movies the way the comic book stabbed at comic books.

In a weird way Deadpool finds a way to do to superhero movies what Watchmen did to superhero comic books. But it's one of those acts that are hard to keep up or build upon. Making Batman v Superman rated R just doesn't seem like it can do what others did by crossing old lines.

I just watched this. I got to admit it was pretty intense! Although I will say he did push certain asymmetries a tad too far, he pretty much nailed the concept down to a science. If this guy learns to dial back a notch or adapts to use other, similar, asymmetries, I'd say hire that SOB on the spot.

Big fan of The Watchmen movie and I don't feel Snyder gets enough credit for it. In particular his choice/use of music is excellent throughout.

His choice of music was ham-fisted and way way WAYYYYY too on-the-nose. His choice of music was as groan-worthy as a really bad pun. It doesn't ruin the movie for me, but it seems like it's trying to. Super-distracting.

We've already had reports from people who have seen the movie saying that Batman is the best part of the movie. So now all we need are articles telling us Superman steals the show and Luthor steals the show. And maybe one more article about WB being frightened about how good and smart the movie is.

There's already been articles about Luthor stealing the show as well. Pretty much everybody but superman has been 'stealing the show' in these articles

Well that's not surprising, everybody knows Superman doesn't steal.
