There's an online poll (check out the left hand side of the screen) going on at the Chicago Tribune site too. Just click here or follow the link at the end of the article.

If it asks you to register, click on ENTERTAINMENT at the top (or click right there) and scroll down to Critics' reviews, look for Commentary and finally the article titled "Batman? Blecch".

Superman wears his underpants on the outside... Batman wears his on his head...:p

All kidding aside, I like Batman better because he's human, but can take on superhuman foes...

Haha, that list at the bottom of the article pegs me as a Batman fan, which is pretty accurate.

But in terms of who's BETTER? In terms of raw power, sure, Superman. In terms of what they do proportionate to who they ARE? Batman all the way.

Well it depends on what you are comparing them with. In terms of power, Supes. In terms of problem solving and logistics, Bats.
They each have thier role to fill on the JLA, Superman is the leader, the driving force. As long as he's in the fight, everyone else will keep fighting. Batman is the planning guy. He'll figure out a way to defeat the bad guy and then have several backup plans ready to go. I honestly think that if Bats need to scarifice someone to defeat the villian he would. he does what ever it takes to win. In the end, they need each other. Superman knows he needs Batman to do what he isnt prepared to do. All those "dirty" things that Batman wouldnt bat an eye at, while Batman, needs Superman to temper his anger, to be that guy to have a kind word for the troops and to show him that there are still decent people in the world he can trust with his life. So I dont think its ones better than the other, they are just diffrent reflections of the same thing, namely, human nature.

Hehe, that list mostly pegs me as Batman fan (and I am one), even though I find myself identifying more with Superman. There's no better between the two. They are way too different to compare. The big letdown for Superman, the one thing that (IMHO) drove a big number of people away was the craziness/cheesiness/stupidity of the Silver Age stories. They have hurt the character too much. For example die-hard Batman fans who loathe Superman have the following to complain about: Superman is the most powerful being in the universe (and believe me, he is not) and he represents pseudo-morals (which to an extend is correct I'm sorry to admit, but it was far more obvious back in Silver and Bronze Ages.)

There is nothing to compare. They are too different to fall into comparrison. It just can't happen.

Batman can defeat anyone, given that he had time to prepare.
Superman can defeat most without any preparation.

Batman relies on fear and darkness to do his job.
Superman relies on the honesty and good will of the people.

Batman isn't afraid to get shit done, even if it means others sacrifice.
Superman will only sacrifice himself, if needed.

Totally different yet both sort of live off each other.

Oh and I won't bring up that time Batman kicked Supermans ass with kryptonite gloves. ;)

Superman all the way for me. He's optimistic, noble, and fun. He's the kind of guy people should strive to be like. Batman's just too dark and depressing these days.

They both need each other. They're like two sides of a coin, although they can exist independently, they make each other better by their presence.

Anyway, Batman hands down! Batman isn't the mask, Bruce Wayne is. There's no question about waking up in the morning and fighting crime. The only question is waking up in the morning and being Bruce Wayne.

The writer of the article needs a slight reality check. To have an opinion on two fictional characters is one thing. But to try and compare and contrast two fictional characters using "real world" facts and attributes is absurd.

And Batman, to me, is the better character.

I like Batman better. But I have a soft spot for Superman. He was my 1st fav as a kid. But Batman is more adult. More realistic. He is just a guy with toys. Superman is a space alien who can do anything. Cool when your young, but not all that realistic.
I love stories that on seem simple but are very complex. This is why I like starwars. It is also why I love Batman (this has been a great summer so far for me)

I'm a Batman fan myself. I'm devoted to the character and really feel for the guy. That said, Superman is and will always be THE GREATEST SUPERHERO OF ALL TIME. He's iconic, inspiring, and noble in every sense. If I could pick one character to actually exist, it'd be Superman.

As for Batman, I do find him to be a more complex character, but I should clear up some misconceptions I'm seeing here. First of all, Batman will not do anything or sacrifice anyone to win. For a man so obsessed with his mission, he has placed very strong shackles on himself. He doesn't use guns, and he doesn't kill or allow people to be killed. Superman, on the other hand, actually has killed, nay executed people. Batman will sacrifice other people in an emotional sense, meaning he's not afraid of betraying the trust of those close to him if he feels it is in the greater good.

Batman also doesn't fight from anger. He doesn't work himself into a fury when he fights and has chastised some of his sidekicks for fighting angry because it makes them sloppy. With all the vast martial arts training he's had, Batman has more than learned to clear himself of being driven outwardly by his emotions. He's still a psychological mess, but he's about as far from a Wolverine type character as you can get. If Superman serves any purpose for Batman, it's that Superman maintains, in some measure, Batman's faith in humanity. Superman proves to Batman that you don't always have to scare people into being good.

Batman, because Batman IS someone each of us could be, Superman is the ultimate fantasy.

Batman is the result of human efort and fortitude and determination. He has become the definition of the American Dream. Superman is the dream we dream to become. A man free of all bonds. The bonds of the Earth, the limits of the frail human body, the limits of social norms. Because he is a man from another world, because he has super strength, because he can fly...he is the dream of dreamers, thos who want to fly, those who want to be invulnerable to a hard and harsh world, yet when a human tries to do as much as he can to be a Superman, we become more nearer to Batman, than we ever would to Superman...

damn, that was poignant...Someone copy this in case the writers at DC see this! :p

    Ahem...

    This will explain my view.

Don't get me wrong I love superman but batman is so much better. If it was one on one, batman would win using his smarts to trick the naive superman. And don't forget about the kryptonite ring he holds :D

With the danger of sounding like a fanboy... Superman is not naive :p

But that Krypto ring kicks arse.
