I hope they actually do something with the idea of Barricade being Bee's rival this time, because the previous films really haven't.

I think its because of the marketing, as the marketing, tie in stuff and video games all pitted Bee and Barricade one way or another, especially the video games and comic books

 

The damaged voice box happened on cybertron or someplace else off world likely before this movie. The way Ratchet refers to it in the 07 movie as he's been treating bumblebee for it, suggests it happened before Bumblebee's arrival to earth entirely. Especially since Ratchet wasn't on earth until the 07 movie when Bumblebee signals them to come down.

If you go by pre-established material/side material, Megatron caused the voice box damage when Bumblebee was there as the allspark was first launched into space. In movie scenes themselves, we only know that it happened before Bumblebee came to earth per ratchet's treatment commentary and Ratchet hadn't been on earth until the 07 movie. Otherwise we'd have a Ratchet cameo. How quick ratchet does a checkup on bumblebee with the laser beam though, suggests it's been a longtime since Bumblebee was near Ratchet last to look at it. Which also suggests it happened long before the 80s.

Likely Barricade is in the back half of the movie. More towards the end and why Bumblebee has to leave this small town, and potentially part of why he has to re-scan a new vehicle mode. So we'll get character building and other decepticons that leads to Barricade being called in as the backup, and then causing a chase scene or other type of scene leading to Bumblebee's renewed hope in his journey thanks to Charlie.

Charlie won't die either. If the character growth is in how they heal each other. Killing her off would make Bumblebee more aggressive, not less aggressive. This is a movie about building bonds and kinship. Not a movie that makes bumblebee fear to befriend humans because he can't save them from Decepticons. This is the transition movie from war torn veteran Bee to friendly happy Bee we see in the 07 movie through TLK. How he becomes his warm endearing self with a renewed vigor after years of witnessing war and what humans do to each other.

The rivalry is also subliminal.
Police car vs Muscle car. With the street racing muscle car being the hero, and the police car the villain. That's why even without side material, audiences immediately see them as rivals to each other. The strong screen presence each has, and then how their vehicle modes contrast.

 

I know it's not gonna happen but I would love if Barricade looked like this.

 

Then it turns out Barricade is jealous of Hot Rod being Bee's BFF.

I won't be surprised if Barry will be in the movie.

The character won the hall of fame poll and by now is probably the most marketable movie Con next to Megatron.

This might be entirely "to sell toys" decision.


But that's absolutely okay.

I find myself hoping for Bumblebee and Windcharger vs barricade and either dead end or knockout

That red Plymouth would've made for a good Windcharger (if it wasn't already slated as a Decepticon). Not sure if they'll use a red car on each side since that might cause confusion among your average moviegoers (and a non-red Windcharger would definitely garner TF fan complaints). Speaking of wrongly colored bots, I wonder if Hot Rod will have a cameo instead if they're going to go with a Bee team up.

 

Or could be Bumblebee vs Barricade, the Red Car, and the last one.
