I thought it generally shared engineering from the Rick Dom

Yeah but the whole armor is different it’s a lot of retooling at minimum.

    Yup.

The Damashiis seem like model kits with stronger plastic and sturdier construction. You're basically sandwiching parts together and then plugging the limbs into ball joints. That means that whenever you mold a new part, like a chest or crotch piece, you're basically tooling up a piece of a new toy. It's not like Transformers mainline stuff in which HasTak remolds a shoulder section or shin piece, and then just repaints/reuses the rest of the body.

When there are slight variations in design, like going from the GM Cold District to the GM Command, you'll get more parts reuse, but those mechs are variations of the same design and exist that way in the anime universe. When you go from the GM Cold District to the RGM-79C, virtually every single piece, from the head to the foot, is different and requires new molding. Same with the Dom vs. Dom Tropen. Bandai's essentially producing a new figure from top to bottom.

To further elaborate, a lot of the reason for this is because different mech designers tend to work on different gundam animes, and even within the same show at times, hence why the GM Type C and Dom Tropen have very clean shapes and lines compared to counterparts in the same lineage. All the MS designs that were made for 0080 were created by Yutaka Izubuchi, hence the various GM types seen in that series share enough design similarities to remold one from another fairly easily. The MS designs from 0083 were made by various designers, including Shoji Kawamori and Hajime Katoki, and as such are visually and proportionally distinct from some of their counterparts.

I understand even minor differences exterior armor pieces require new tooling but going from the Rick Dom to the Dom Tropen still shares the same engineering - how a leg joint will clear a skirt with that bulbous shape; how a shoulder will flex, etc. For a company of Bandai's scale, exterior differences are easy as pie. Creating something like the Xamel, which itself has basically no repaint potential, or the Nightengale, etc . . . those jobs need to be spaced out

Having said that, the GP01FB doesn't seem that hard for them to do. They've certainly done much more challenging gundam designs. That's why one is inevitable, and frankly . . . probably the next on deck.

Then after the GP01FB, they should make some easy money with some tan colored Zakus, maybe a web-exclusive Dom tropen desert color, and then the Powered GM and GM Cannon 2

and i would bet that the GP03 is next, with the mobile armor attachment a remote possibility, all web exclusive

Many of the suits in the Damashii line share the same basic joint designs at the hips, shoulders, elbows and knees--the ways they move are fairly standard even among suits that look really different. It's not a degree-of-difficulty thing for Bandai so much as a cost thing...it always is. Creating new molds is expensive. It's whether Bandai wants to invest in new molds and whether it thinks it'll get a proper return on investment. Bandai's cut a lot of lines short over the years--and specifically cut the Figuarts Turtles line due to unsatisfactory sales--so we'll just have to see.

As Quickwing said, different shows have different mecha designers, and my favorite ones worked on 0083, so like you, I'm hoping that Bandai will continue. I really need a GM Custom and Powered GM, along with the Gelgoog Marines and Gerbera Tetra. Oh, and a Dendrobium and Neue Ziel.

This! Jesta is the figure I want the most! It would be so awesome if they made a Jesta Cannon add on as well as a weapon set of all the equipment from Gundam Narrative.

Unit 00 seems to have different accessories from its original release. The last time, it was a P-Bandai exclusive, and had swappable bandaged limbs and an N2 mine.

It is interesting to see it released without a mine, the ICBM, or bandaged limbs.

Got lucky and was able to preorder a Unit 01 at HLJ. Can someone pinpoint the differences between this and the earlier release? I was hoping for narrower hips but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Also Revoltechs Unit 08b is more expensive than the RS, which is certainly interesting.
