For the longest time I said, "screw PS3, I'm finishing it with PS2, I'm over it". I was not going to upgrade and even bought a spare PS2 'just in case'.
After all this time I am cosidering a PS3 again, but the original backward compatible units, using the emotion chip, are stupidly expensive.

Its an old whinge, I know, but its robbery what people ask for units. Up to over $800 for a boxed, new PAL unit and 600-700 used.
Bollocks to that. Its still cheaper to buy a PS3 and keep the PS2, but then I have more clutter to accommodate along with my PSX and PS2. Far out, could Mr Sony please make his PS3's backwards compatible again? Ok, whinge over.

your fault for wanting to "finish it with PS2". Now those backwards compatible models are rare and sellers will capitalize on it. Im glad I got one when they came out.

I bought a 60 gb Ps3 used 2 years ago from Gamestop for $430.00, They sell them now for 3 something, however I wanted it. When the 60 gb was new it sold for something like $499 if I am correct. I am happy with it, I use it all the time, it's my entertainment center.

Dont get me wrong, I love both my PS3 and xbox 360, but I laughed when both came out and people would complain the PS3 was more expensive; what they didnt understand was that for $600, you acquired everything (console and Bluray player), whereas with the xbox for $400 youd just get the console and then have to pay $200 more for the HD drive.

The lack of backwards-compatibility is the SOLE reason I have not wanted to upgrade to a PS3.

IS there any chance Sony could fix the issue in the future?

You know I spent a few months hunting and finally got a BC 60 GB PS3 only to receive it and realize that the PAL 60 GBs have software emulation while the NTSC 60 GB have hardware emulation. Anyway, 6 months later I noticed that I had never ever used the BC features (or extra card readers etc) so I sold it off for a profit and picked up a slim. WOO FREE MONEY!

I highly doubt it, especially with the release of the God of War Collection. That's GoW I and II remastered in HD and converted to play on the PS3. I imagine they plan to start offering PS2 games for Download from the PS Store in the same way they already offer PS1 games on there, but I obviously don't know for sure. It was said that they have no intention of re-offering BC on the PS3 going forward though.

I noticed that too and yes, I am fully aware its my own fault by wanting to end it with the PS2, its one of those 'what was I thinking' things.
Plus, on the practical side, it was a bit expensive for my wallet at the time - new house, new furniture. I didn't feel like forking out more money on something I, at the time, wasn't really too interested in upgrading to. It might still end with the PS2 unless things change.

Its become my number one reason too. If you couldn't tell. ;)

If you search eBay you should be able to find a cheap one. I found one(american version), a 60gb, for $350 shipped with 1 year warranty.

Who would have thought that a no-longer-in-production item that is highly desirable would be expensive?

    NOT ME.

    What she/he/it said.

PAL gamers were pretty much screwed from the get go.

I got my 60gig right when i found out they were dropping it only to find I don't really use the backwards compatibility either...

I'm still surprised that Sony, knowing how many people are still hedging on the system because of it, don't at least offer an emulator in the PSN store for those who want it.

I'm still hanging with my PS2, someday I'll buy a PS3. But I cannot effort one and the lack of backwards compatibility bugs me...

I still have a PSX because some games won't run 100% at the PS2...

Maybe I should build a cupboard for the consoles... :lol

I dont know, Sony's whole reason for cutting the BC was due to cost cutting and becuase their survey's showed that consumers didnt want that according to various press reports over the last few years.

Glad I coughed up the $600 three years ago for my 60gig when it was new. I definitely have used the BC because my PS2 backlog is staggering. Sometimes being an early adopter can have advantages.

I doubt it. With the PS3 Slim, I presume they redesigned the motherboard for greater efficiency and cost-cutting, so reintroducing the PS2's components would require a third motherboard design.
