I guess something you can actually play with is a toy.

Something you can't isn't. No matter that price point, it's still a toy.

    Come on.

Something like a vintage boxed/carded figure, to me is no longer a toy, but a piece of history. So it's just wrong to take it out and play with it.

Possible models aren't considered toys because they are so fragle... I'd say the same can be said of some figures like Masterpiece. They aren't really delicate as models, but some of them come close. They are just so intricate, that they can easily break. MP figures just aren't intended to be toys.

Everything else though, yeah, they are toys. Collectible toys, but definatly toys. (that is unless they are kept in their boxes for 20+ years, then they become history. :)  )

Masterpieces and Alts, other than that $ worth comes into effect, like a botcon figure wouldn't be played with in the sand box i don't think

I'd have to agree mostly here, as "toys" is a very broad definition of the things we use and interact with.

People tend to confuse "toys" with "child's play things", and even then we haven't really narrowed things down enough to start drawing many lines.

Just because I have a G1 MiB Fortress Maximus that I may not want a four-year-old messing around with, it's still a "toy" by definition.

Well, if you never take things out of the package and keep them packaged, its not a toy, its a collection.

A toy is defined as an object that is meant to be played with.

If its always in the box, it means it was not really played with.

Its up to the individual to decide. I could pick up a rock and start playing with it and you could call it a toy.

I guess for me, the older and less accessible it is the less toy it is. My old and newer stuff up on shelves out of reach are less of toys that WFC bumblebee which is on my desk to play with until I get something new to play with, and he gets a permanent display position.

So if you keep a Zu Zu Pet in the box it's not a toy? I would definitely say it's still a toy.

My entire collections is made up of collectibles! Toys are for children and I'm much too mature for that.

At least that's what I tell myself as Sideswipe goes "VROOM VROOM" on Soundwave's face! Eat that biyatch! Superior my ass!

    Ehem... like i said. Mature.

Totally agree. I don't let my sons play with my BTs, but they are still my toys. All my TFs are toys regardless of the price or fragility (I don't own any TF statues) because I didn't buy them to display in the package.

On the other hand, I have a few SW figures still sealed on card, or some loose figures that went straight to display. I only paid a couple of bucks for some of them, but they are not toys to me. They are collectibles as I bought them strictly to make my collection bigger.

Yeah, I don't see it being defined by cost or rarity.
I feel it all depends on how the piece is perceived by the owner.

I would say just about anything that costs over the Leader Class pricepoint, with the addition of domestic releases (Big Bumblebees, Combiner Devs). I guess anything that is blatantly aimed at kids.

Personally, I don't really consider Masterpiece-level (MP, BT, Alternity, etc.) figures "toys" in the sense that they're usually too fragile for regular play.
