The simple answer is never. They will never release a 'definitive' version of anything, and that's because of pure marketing.

Personally, I would call my G1 adventure quits once i did have one of every 'major' character that I wanted to get. But that will never happen.

Keep an eye on what's out there and what you really like and you can't go wrong.

Not enough at least until we get Buzzsaw, Gears, Bombshell, Shrapnel, and maybe Constructicons with decent individual robot modes.

There are figures that I would say are perfect. Siege Jetfire, Studio Series 86 Wreck-Gar, SS 86 Grimlock, SS 86 Hotrod, Kingdom Cyclonus, Kingdom Inferno come to mind.

Sure, but the show was never for you, me, or anyone here. We're already a captured market that come to this website each day and talk Transformers of our own volition.

If you don't have any idea who the 'youtube celebrity' VA's are, it's a good sign you were never intended as the primary target audience of the show. I'm assuming the age demographic is somewhere between 14 and 22-ish.

After seeing the upcoming Kickback, I find myself quite fine with the last versions of the trio, as I prefer the smaller size. Nothing against the new one that's coming, but I'm more than happy with those I have and many others have indicated that they feel the same. So it's a came that out of so many other figures that could have done, they could have skipped the insecticons for a while longer. (Considering that the "old" versions are fairly easy to find and at fair prices)

Jetfire, Grimlock and Hotrod while acceptable to an extent, are very far from perfect. I do and don't regret getting Jetfire because I found the design to be less than expected in hand and has many annoyances, I absolutely feel ripped of with Hotrod as while he is nice, he's still just a fancy deluxe that even at higher priced class, still has some seriously annoying flaws, and the dinobots are way too cartoonish and even too large for me and for the size and price, feels like another unfinished figure again, so they are not even on my radar, so much so that I've ended up going for 3rd party versions that I consider what will be my "definitive Dinobots" (and the wait is killing me).

No need to argue, I can understand that for some, these are everything that they wanted, but not for me and I'm just saying that I do not consider them perfect in any way. Nice to an extent yes, but not perfect (and enough to drive me to look for better).

Just saying that I do have "definitive" versions of a LOT of characters, just not these (you mentioned) for the most part... and if they come up with something that catches my eye for it's looks and design, I would get it quite possibly, but it wouldn't be a "new definitive", it would just be a cool new toy as it wouldn't be replacing any other that I may have. And then some like Hot Rod, is probably the last as this is not a perfect figure, but it's close enough to be the last Hot Rod I get as it's good enough and I do like it enough, but I'm just not that invested in this character to ever bother getting another version.

That's pretty much what I stated, that I wasn't this show's audience and most probably most of those that are about the toys without caring that much about the media. Not sure what you mean about the youtube thing and why you stated it as I didn't mention anything about such a thing.

...And I expanded on it, even introducing my own points that you hadn't mentioned. No need to get paranoid.

I'm curious what you find flawed! I'm not going to argue, I'm all about the chocolate vanilla concept. But yeah, could you expand on that?

    Never!

Honestly, I think once the current run of G1 has been exhausted we’ll get more variety and maybe Generations even will turn into something unique where old designs aren’t modernized but older characters will get completely brand new designs. Kinda like what’s happening with Bulkhead.

G1 is already getting phased out anyway. Legacy is very mixed in terms of characters from different eras/lines.

As soon as they make decent Combaticons and redeco them into G2 Combaticons, that's when I'll be done with G1 at least. And maybe a good Seeker mold, but that's never going to happen, so I'm not going to hold out for that.

In the SS86 thread, a few of us brought up the fact that unless you twist the arms in unnatural angles, you can't move the arms very well, and this also included that the arms on his side are compressed against him. We worked out a few modifications that helped (we even included pictures, etc. as we helped each other) but still limited as the engineering was done a bit overcomplex to accomplish much... when a simpler approach could have done wonders to improve him and reduce part count. I feel that in time, the arms assembly may give due to the small parts.

There's also that they sacrificed the back of the car mode that for a figure that they bumped up a class for "budget" reason, they could have tried a bit more.

And also, the top with the yellow parts that should have been red.

And others have reported parts that broke on them, and as the plastic has the slightly harder and more brittle feel to it, I'm not surprised.

It's still a nice figure, but I just consider that it should have been priced as a deluxe and just omit some of the "extras" if those were the items that shifted it to the higher price (even though those costs barely a few pennies to produce).

My usual stand for such figures is that I don't regret getting it, but I regret the price I paid.

for me it was enough the moment they gave priority to the ss86 line instead of the live action stuff in reveals

The thing I want most is the thing I know I'll never have. A SS86 Megatron done in chug scale. Even if they had to make it a pulse exclusive and slap a big leader class price point on it to justify the limited mold use I'd buy it gladly. I've seen a few 3rd party companies do good legends scale g1 megs so an oversized ko of one of them is probably my only hope.

With megs being a non starter, I think that even if SS86 gave us new Constructicons in the modern chug scale with better aesthetics it would be enough for me. That means a smaller Devastator, which I think is fine. The Combiner Wars Devy can stay in combined mode and be humongous which is the only mode that seems to make any sense to keep him in as the scaling and proportions on the bots is just ridiculous. I just wish we had better detailed and scaled individual bots that fit in with the size and look of WFC/SS86.

Uh... Sorry. Don't understand the question. I think whatever else happened in Transformers, G1 is going to be around for awhile. At least until us old guys start to die off. Personally, it's all I'm really interested in although I completely respect not everyone shares this view and I enjoy the pictures of BW and some of the Japanese characters. As for G1, I'd like to see a retooling of the original series, but don't think I could ever get enough.

    The answer is: it's complicated.

Hasbro definitely knows they can't loop around G1 forever and they have to try something different again, it's why they're sort of closing out the rest of G1 stuff with Legacy and SS86 going forward. In a way, WFC was a soft-reboot for the CHUG line after POTP and they wanted to redo the cast in a familiar style barring a few figures they deemed already good enough (see the countless PW Trilogy reissues since Siege) but after a certain character is done now, Habsro isn't feeling as inclined to go back to them expect for a few characters like Ironhide and Ratchet. Earthrise Optimus is basically seen to them as the quintessential G1 Optimus going forward, you may see other versions of the character in the future again but not that particular one.

That being said, I can't be fully certain that after years of whatever new fresh thing Hasbro tries again they won't just go back to G1, it's a nature of the market and it's always best to just vote on these things with your wallet, if nobody buys then they'll course correct. I for one am I fan of seeing G1 stuff because I'm a fairly new TF collector, in fact starting right when Siege first hit, but I can totally see why a lot of older collectors are feeling super miffed about this.

    Like I said, it's complicated.

Honestly... Why are we even hyping up legacy if the definitive laser Optimus was already released in the Reveal the shield.

If the sales numbers paint a picture that suggests G1 is still what people want and that some of the other series aren't moving plastic, then I am hard-pressed to believe Hasbro could avoid making more G1 figures, in that situation. Apart from Sunbow and BW characters, I have picked up quite a few Cyberverse, TFP, and TF2007\DOTM\BBM figures due to getting into those media and liking the characters. But Beast Machines\BW Neo\Unicron Trilogy\RID\Animated and some of the other series have not succeeded at hooking me like that. I could only imagine buying a few of the very coolest ones; maybe Cybertron Metroplex, Animated Sunstorm, RID Soundwave (taking suggestions!)... But am I a typical collector? Who frackin' knows. I for one am excited to see who shelfwarms this year.
