In Pokemon i'm always a dude, since i'm a dude.

if i was playing another kind of game, maybe a chick if she's a qt enough or her voice is great.

ever since selecting a boy or girl to play as in Pokémon Crystal and so on, its been a coin toss on which version i'll select what gender i'll pick.

except for Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. i always pick female because its closer to the show during generation 3.

Which is exactly my reasoning, I'd rather be looking at a girl for hours than a guy. Works in beat 'em ups (Cammy, Sarah, Hitomi, Ling Xiaoyu, Seung Mina etc) RPG's or whatever. If the choice is there I'll take it.

Gets a bit weird in RPG's when bloke NPC's start hitting on my character, I'm like, ew get away and then my character engages in lesbionics.

I think the real question though is how many dudes actually role play as a female when they are playing mmo's and such. I used to get barked at a bit in the games I played because I would just flat out tell people that I was a dude and that was that. Have no qualms saying I'm a dude that likes to use female avatars for pretty much everything.

I actually knew other dudes who would go as far as not participating in voice chat because they didn't want to blow their covers as neckbeards. We had plenty of good lulz when a person playing a female avatar would join voice chat and use text to speech instead of their voice :lol . Yup, cover blown neckbeard.

About 90% of the time whenever the option is available, I am a male who chooses a male avatar. Pokemon, Harvest Moon, Dragon Quest 3 and 4, The Sims (though usually with the Sims I would create multiple characters of various genders) I've pretty much always chosen a male avatar. There are exceptions of course. In my replays of Fire Emblem Awakening I generally have a skewed 6:4 rate of choosing the female avatar over the male avatar... mostly because I'm a total Chrom/FemRobin shipper. :p  With Fire Emblem Fates I plan on alternating - male avatar for Birthright, female for Conquest, male for Revelations, female for Birthright replay, male for Conquest replay, female for Revelations replay. Dragon Quest IX, my very first playthrough had me using a male avatar but almost every time I've replayed it since then, I've used a female avatar mostly because I really like the default design.

You know, now that I think about it, my gaming library contains very, very few games where you can choose your character's gender let alone customize his/her appearance. I'm not really a fan of customizable avatars to begin with.

I immediately thought of this when I read about the Fire Emblem Fates petting game, LOL. I wonder how many life questions will be raised.

Anyway, I typically pick the option to be a male avatar when presented with a choice.

Does it count if I don't have any kind of facial hair?

Also does it really matter what my gender is and which one I choose? :lol

Gotta play it out a bit like tikngat.

My first playthrough of any game almost always starts out with a male character. In the first playthrough, I am generally getting a lay of the land as regards moral choices - I generally play as a man who fulfills both his promises and his threats.
Games with romantic options might prompt me to spend a second playthrough as a woman. I haven't played many games where NPCs react differently depending on gender - I like the idea, but haven't gotten through my GOG backlog to games of that era.
When I play as a female, my moral choices are different. Apparently, I am fine with playing as a dishonest, ruthless man, but not an unpleasant woman.

It really does depend on the design and what I can do with the character, customation wise. The games that involve choosing gender I have most experience with are Pokémon. My very first Pokémon game, I chose female because of the design looked better to me.

Another example came in Pokémon Y. I liked the advertised female design, but the customization wasn't too good and after watching a play through I decided that I would go as a blonde haired guy. In the remakes, both designs took warming up to so I chose my gender (male.) Next play through will be female, because I now like her design better.

That is how lora croft in tomb raider was born. They said in a interview that lora was a girl due to the fact that the game would take a long time to make and they would rather be stuck staring at a girls butt then a mans!

They did a survey a few years ago also on this very topic and got a lot of male players who said they did play as female. Why? "they would rather look at a girl butt over a guys!"

    LOL.

    3rd person view - female.
    All other views - male.

GTA5 was a bit off on this. At the time I started on PS3, there was no 1st person view. So I made my character female. After transferring to PS4 I got 1st person view after the character was created.

    I'm male, I don't play as a female unless

    A. It's mandatory
    B. The male option looks terrible comparatively
    C. I'm doing a second playthrough and I feel like playing female

Whichever option has the better voice actor or actress. Mass Effect and Sunset Overdrive really benefited from not playing as the guy.

I'm a male and I usual play as male, but I wish more games would let me play my characters as bisexuals.
