My roommate's got a pretty bad infestation right now, and all the recomended programs scan for free, but won't fix anything till he hands over some money.

Now, personally, I don't trust paying for this type of thing since Nortin overlooked a rather bad infection on my box, and my roomate gots some issues of his own.

So my question to you: Are there any good protection programs that are still FREE?

AVG and Ad-aware (both are free) are must-haves on your comp.

Agreed. This thread always seems to come up and AVG is always the answer.

I'll agree. AVG is the best FREE one, although I have tried Avast as well (also works great).

You can also get Ad-Aware SE Personal (or the 2007) and Spyware Blaster (which helps block some spyware from entering your PC). Those also work well with AVG and Avast, if I'm not mistaken.

Avast all the way. I love how it announces verbally when it's updated itself...

That actually creeped me out the first time it happened. I was wandering around and suddenly heard my computer talking.

Then I heard later what it actually said and it made a great deal more sense.

    Ion Cannon ... ready.

I'd never heard of AVG before. I might use it, if I didn't already have Avast already. (P.S. Avast rules)
