Are the ‘retro’ Headmasters a dismal failure?

    "Reissues of the Titans Return Headmasters with a new G1-inspired deco."

    Couldn't be a harder pass for me. But to each, their own.

    I've only seen a few once or twice in person. I preordered mine back in December, assuming I'd never see these on shelves (and I imagine a lot of us did the same).

    How do they look next to the WFC figures ? I’ve never seem them in the wild at that empty shelves wasteland called Walmart. The description says they’re only 5.5 inches, but I thought they kinda look bigger from the pics I’ve seen ? I was tempted to look for some online, mainly the 3 ‘cons, but I’m afraid they’ll look weird scale wise if they’re that small

    I prefer weird wolfs face on the first release (scary) but I picked up the toon accurate version because I’m good like that.

    They look great together – only ones I had at hand were Legends Blurr and TR Triggerhappy, but they're good representations of the line.

    People massively tend to overstate the differences between the WFC figures and prior CHUG for some weird reason (I think it's to convince themselves they're not paying more and getting less?).
    Generally the figures are scaled smaller (especially true at Voyager and Leader), but most T30 and beyond Deluxes and scale just fine in robot mode.

    Dangit, forgot to pull up Blurr's crest

    When I posted that last image I noticed you specifically asked about the 'cons and realized Mindwipe was hiding behind my computer (sneaky bugger anyway), so here he is with some WFC guys.

    Somebody needs to bust out the air-duster after a year in quarantine in the basement...

    Thanks for the picture, that answer my question...yeah I kinda want them now, but they are more expensive than I thought online. I thought I’d just order them online from walmart and be done with it. I don’t go to the store very often, but seeing how’s their stock recently in my area I think I’m screwed unless they’re back at regular price online.

    I would check BigBadToyStore if you're lookin for em. I don't know if they have em but I know they're usually really good with pricing. If they do have them they'll only be marked up a few dollars. As for the figures themselves I have 4 of the 6. Hardhead, Highbrow, Weirdwolf, and Skullcruncher. I'm happy with all em. Weirdwolf and Skullcruncher have great beast modes, they're currently the only 2 of the 30 or so figures I have displayed that are in their alt mode. Hardhead is great, have him displayed alongside Siege Arcee in homage to their partnership in IDW comics. I will admit though Highbrow is kinda eh. But if you're looking for the cons they're great and I highly recommend them and they'll fit in with the SEK line no problem.

    Where I’m at in Illinois, the Retro Headmasters never sit on the shelve for more than an afternoon. Or at least , that’s what I’m told by guys who has seen them because I’ve never even seen them sitting at retail.

    the seven they've done is enough i'd say. as they are the only ones who had different headsculpts in japan.
    now, if hasbro/walmart wants to keep the line going and give us some Headmaster jrs via creative repaints, i wouldnt say no.

    for example:
    Repugnus = Squeezeplay
    Grotusque = Fangry
    Weirdwolf + new beast mode head = Horri-bull
    Chromedome or Hotrod = Nightbeat, Minerva, Siren
    not really sure how they'd make Hosehead.
    and we already have face sculpts ready to go for everyone.

    also, toss out another Scourge,, but use the head that came with Takara's Sharkticon
    and we could also get a decent Slipstream from Windblade. just use the Ghost Starscream Headmaster that came with Japanese Octane.

    No I certainly don’t think they were a failure. In my area it was the exact opposite to what you said. The G1 figures would shelfwarm like crazy, then go on clearance. These have been much harder to find (though I did manage to get all but Highbrow who I got the TR figure for). But these were great for people like me that missed out on most of Titans Return (I started collecting in the last wave or so of that line). I never understood the mentality of “Well I bought these figures already so clearly this line is a failure and a mistake.” Like, not everyone has the chance to have collected everything since Classics days (or before). Just cuz you have the figure doesn’t mean it’s a great opportunity for someone to find it at an affordable cost who may have missed out or been too young or broke to collect before. The way I see it, more of a figure helps keep the crazy scalper prices down.

    I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum from the OP. I think ALL Generations figures should be in retro packaging. There would be no shelf warming because everyone would be buying two.

    Thanks ! Must be recent because I don’t think they had them before. Just ordered Skullcruncher ! Weirdwolf was already sold out and they don’t seem to offer Mindwipe yet.

    based on what ive seen out in the wild, theyre not a failure. ive seen mountains of these things in stock. of the several Walmarts i frequent in Houston, theyre either sold out or nearly sold out with just 1 or 2 remaining..
