I don't think they really need to explain the gender *shrug* The little 5 page snippet did show that the Arcee sisters look like they're one personality, three bodies. Kinda neat.
Why does that need explaining? I think most people would just accept the idea that some robots have male programming and others have female programming.

Transformers shaped like human females instead of males are confusing and need explanation. Transformers (that never transform) shaped like a scorpion or a cat make perfect sense.
They are robots but not exactly ROBOTS they are living organisms. does it really matter if its a girl?

And so was the computer from I-robot...in fact, a lot of computers have female personalities and voices in fiction.. Honestly if robots cant be girls, how can they be guys? If your going to pull a truly gender-less robotic species they cant have male personalities and voices too. e___e
