I purchased the dinobots released thus far with the intentions of repainting them into my interpretation of a screen accurate representation, and I just finished the Voyager Grimlock yesterday. I felt that instead of making him have almost a greenish brown tint to him, such as the recent tv spots should suggest, I felt he was mostly different tones of silver, gray, black, and brown. I base coated the figure with a matte black paint, then I sprayed a hammered metal effect silver paint over most of the pieces of the base coat. After that, I spent a while dry brushing and washing in various grays, black, rust, and browns over the silver, allowing some of the hammered metal effect to shine through in parts. I also left the head out of the hammered metal painting as I felt a matte black would help break up the figure a little bit, so I went over the face other than the teeth in silver with red eyes of course. I left the weapon matte black as well but applied the same silver detailing of the face to the exterior panels of the shaft of his mace. I yet to find slash yet, but so far I have the Scorn, Slug, Strafe, and Voyager Grimlock complete with intentions to complete the Leader Grimlock sometime soon since I feel his dino mode scales better with the other three. Feel free to leave comments and suggestions as they are much appreciated!
Thank you! I feel he was the most successful of the four thus far, and he was also the most recent, so I guess I kinda perfected what I wanted to do with the figure with the others haha And I forgot to post a dino mode group shot!
These look great in a group shot - gonna hold off on getting a Grimlock tho, until I see the movie - so I knkw which one is more accurate. I think the Voyager is closest, but needs some mods before it's perfect.
Ok this looks really great. I'm searching all over - was hoping they would actually make a model that looks like this (more like the movie). Look forward to seeing your group photo! thanks.
Thanks guys! On the subject of accuracy, IMO the voyager Grimmy's alt mode is more in scale, although it could do with some extra length, while the leader is the better robot. I also like how they engineered the legs on the leader as the transformation is unique among Grimlocks. The legs end up forming the dino torso versus forming the tail as they normally do. This of course leads to the dino mode being out of scale and, in the words of Peaugh, looks like a fish. The concept is admirable though. I don't think they will release a grimy figure like the CGI, the closest will probably be akin to the black knight Grimlock that Takara had announced. And here is a new pic now that I finished up Evasion OP and Hound. The voyagers:
Thanks! Haha this was just the culmination of a bunch of figures that were done as of yesterday. I had started on a few of them but I buckled down and completed them all the day before so I could do some photos, which I in turn shared with Radicons. The only ones from AOE I have yet to get and start on is Galvatron and the wave two deluxes which seem to have been skipped in my area, which is crap but whatever.. And now I have 13 customs on here, half of which were just added yesterday haha. It was a blast completing all of the figures because as much as the whole simplified transformation deal kinda sucks, they are choke full of detail, giving customizers plenty of room to play!
Thanks man! This was just my interpretation of it that I had before a bunch of the CGI shots came out, so it's not super accurate, but I love how it looks nonetheless, especially when he's posed with the rest of the team!
