I spent Sunday afternoon repainting this Voyager AOE Grimlock with my 7 year old son. Had a blast.

    YES.

    Yes, yes, yes.

All the yes's. This is what I'm going to do with the leader.

That looks way better than what Hasbro picked for a color scheme. Are you going to put any of the greenish patina on it to go with his look in the film?

I don't know. Isn't the "green patina" just reflected light?

I would say some of his armor would pick up reflected light from other objects, but looking at the top of his spine in photos, it looks like he's been sitting in the elements and weather.

Up to you, but after looking at the grey paint job I may pick the voyager up over the confusingly proportioned leader class.

Messing around with light washes of green, brown and orange on metallics can make for some really cool dirt and rust effects that add depth and realism...if you do, though, just remember to go at it lightly; it's easier to add more if you need it than to get rid of it if there's too much...

Can't wait to see the robot mode; I passed on this toy because of how garish the colours are, and the fact that the robot doesn't really even have the slightest nod towards classic Grimlock (at least to me anyway...). Perhaps this custom will change my mind...

You done a great job on this . I agree with most viewers too that maybe some weathering would help like how you did the movie 1 Megatron leader class back then.

Yes, this Grimlock has several washes already.

We base coated with Tamiya Flat Black and added a second light spray coat of aluminum. We used a coffee brown ink wash as well as a dark burnt umber paint wash. We used silver enamel to highlight the teeth and claws and also gave a light drybrushing of alclad chrome and silver chrome enamel to bring out the highlight details. We used Tamiya clear red and orange acrylic on the eyes.

Yes, I see what you mean. I will probably skip adding green on this one. This is a custom for my son to play with. He was the art director on this one. :)

I really like this mold. More than the leader class one. I'll probably pick up a few more to repaint and focus a bit more on the details.

Man, this is one slick paint job. If only there was a group shot of all of the Dinobot figures painted up accurately (hint hint).

Many are complaining that the all silver mangled metal look in the movie sucks...yet this color translates to a near perfect toy! The lack of color definition makes this look like a full dinosaur not a weird folded up robot with clashing colors. This looks great!

Awesome job, I agree that with some weathering this could look even more awesome, but you've done a world of difference to the mold.

That's easily 100 times better looking than Hasbro's color scheme. Congrats on the great job! :thumb
