At the moment AoE has earned more money in China than the U.S. In China it has grossed almost $135 Million, while in the U.S. it has grossed $121 Million. It is also on track to break the all time record gross for a movie in China, currently held by Avatar with $217,7 Million.

    From the article;
"It’s almost unheard of for a Hollywood film of this size and scale to surpass its Stateside gross in a foreign country, particularly a fiercely protectionist market such as China, which often takes steps to safeguard its local productions by giving foreign films unpalatable release slots."

There's a billion more people in China. I assumed this would be a given.

Its a great start. And yeah, China should bring in more money than the US. They kind of have a whole lot more people than the US lol.

Would like to see what the world totals are up to right now.

You have a valid point Smashs, but the thing is that movies rarely gross more in a single country outside the U.S. than it does in the U.S. (I edited the article with a quote also saying that).

    So does that mean...

    * more Hollywood movies will have a setting in China?

    * will Hollywood tap into other countries will large movie going populations?

Overseas is where all the money is these days. We're not shelling out thousands a month to take our families to see a movie a dozen times anymore.

I read a book called 'Sleepless in Hollywood,' that outlined the distribution strategy: basically, the DVD market dried up, so overseas money is now the new fountain from which they drink...and by the looks of things, overseas marketplaces love our sequels. While we may complain about them, they'll eat them up like candy.

We are growing tired of those Ice Age sequels, but probably 5/7 of their grosses came from international.

Word is there's a distribution deal in pace that in China, the majority of new theaters are being installed with either 3D, or IMAX 3D capabilities, and that is mainly how imported US films are being seen over there.

I bet you if they were to actually do a TFs in Japan, every person in that country would see it lol. Ok, maybe not every but I think its time to take TFs to the country of its origins.

So how are we going to make more with the 5th Transformers? Have all of it take place in China?

Yep, I've never heard of a big-budget American action movie actually doing better in a single foreign country, ever. This would set a significant precedent.

Well yea, but that's because of the restrictions China has placed on foreign movies getting wide releases there. Paramount knew exactly what they were doing.

Edit - I suppose I should say "Isn't it because of the regulations?", since I don't know for sure what they are. I remember reading something about US movies doing poorly in China because they didn't meet their guidelines for a wide release.

Let's go the other way. Let's see if we can get it banned in China. The Autobots start a democratic revolution in China.

TF5 will have the US demanding that China hand over the Transformers, as China has given them asylum, as well as a gigantic mansion for the Yaeger family, and a premium contract with KSI to develop new technology...of which the US will simply assume that Joshua Joyce has become un-American and is helping foreign interests.

That was the entire point of AOE. They were pandering to the Chinese market.

    and it worked.

shame I wanted it to fail and another country ended up liking it more instead, and then TF5 would pander to them.

And in protest congress will demand that all Chinese restaurants in the US now be called "Asian American Cuisine".

Which country would you prefer and what kind of pandering would you prefer?
