i am a bumpkin. yep, i live in Cornfield county, next door to Hee-Haw and all those inbred yahoos....
seriously, i live in rural AL, and the cable provider here stopped 2 miles from my house and won't extend until a petition guaranteeing customers is turned in.

so, either a phone line or Hughes Net for our Internet.

Well, we were told about high speed, broadband...yada yada. until we used it.
it wasn't until my mom complained when she couldn't download a file she bought that i did some reading and discovered the Fair Access Policy and a few other things.

Problem is, that even when the most i do is read the news and check email, we still get shoddy DL rates.
I was wondering if any others have had the same experiences with "satellite internet" service.

i am moving soon, and can't wait to put down my money for honest to god cable modem connection speeds.

out here in the sticks, satellite service is better than nothing....almost.

Satellite connection sucks. That's what I have to use. We are literally 200 ft from the DSL line and Qwest won't budge.

    tell me about it.
they stop running cable/dsl within smelling distance and then stop.

    if i had a laptop, i could haunt a local college's wi-fi setup...they have T1 and zoooooooooooooom.....sigh.
knew a CIS major that would plug his laptop into a wall outlet in an empty classroom, set up a string of DLs and leave it, by the time he needed the laptop in the afternoon, he had 80 percent done and kept it running as he worked on in class projects.
thanks to him, I got my copy of system shock, lol.

I remember the commercials for it when I had Dish. With the annoying red-headed lady.

I'm so glad I moved back to the city with decent internet. Of course now that I work for the ISP, I get 10Mbps DL and 1.5 Mbps UL for free. :)
