Anyone else think that the Empire in SW is not evil?

This reminds me of an episode of HIMYM. You know, the one where we find out Barney roots for the bad guys in movies.

    Empire=Bad

    'Nuff said :thumbs2:

    No Case for the Empire

It's the armor. That's all it is. Take away Batman's cape and cowl and suddenly Bruce Wayne isn't all that interesting. Same goes for Boba and Jango with the Mandalorian armor

If that applies to the Death Star, it also applies to Alderaan. They were aiding and abetting known terrorists. Disintegration's too good for 'em, I say...

It defies all common sense to suggest that every single person on the Death Star was combat military. Who cleans the toilets, books the meeting rooms, mournfully notifies the family of Darth Vader's latest "gentlemen's disagreement" that their loved one has passed away.

There would have to be bags of admin staff on a battlestation the size of a moon. They were just doing the job all public servants do: to serve the legitimate government of the day - and if anyone can lay claim to that title, it's certainly not the rebels. (At least Palpatine was elected at one time or another.)

This is, by the way, total hogwash. It was never meant to be read that way, of course it wasn't. But it says something about George Lucas' abilities that it can be interpreted like that without too much effort.

Not really. The Empire had the manpower and ships to occupy Alderran without killing many civilians in the process.

The Rebels were undergunned and saw an opportunity to kill military personnel in large quantities with a single blow.

So it's perfectly okay to kill thousands or millions of people if you've had a few budget cuts? Nice. :p

I don't get it. He clearly says, "Fiction is not consistent with reality for purposes of presentation" and then goes on to say "Vader kills one of his henchmen in anger, which, in reality, is so wrong"...

    Just being a bastard.

well.. I will say one thing actually on the side of the people in the first Deathstar.. to bring in a Star Trek angle, a good Federation captain with a small fleet would have tried to disable the main gun before blowing the station all to hell.. granted we also don't know if there was any way to disable the main gun without blowing it all to hell anyway.

Of course for that matter, why didn't the Empire engineer in some soft of fail safe device into the second deathstar.. oh yeah. The emperor somehow overlooked the teddybears with rocks of stormtrooper slaying +5 and logs of epic machine destruction:lol

The Empire was not a bad thing...
until the whole tyranny thing starts.

but the problem with the Empire (and i think it happened in RL with both the Romans and the modern USSR) is it was so big that the Empire's grip wasn't as solid as the Emperor wanted. to Micromanage a galaxy and oversee everything is nigh impossible.

my dislike of the Empire just comes from the inconsistency of enforcing their rule. it becomes senseless and cruel and naturally a rebellion will occur.

really, i think most beings in the SW universe really didn't give a rat's ass about what was going on in the Empire. the rulers of these "systems" probably worked to gain favor with the Empire to keep their position, or bring the imperial money in. the further down the line you go, the less they cared. beings on the bottom rungs of society were concerned with finding work, or food. survival. where that job or foof came from, they didn't care.

if the Empire was strict or heavy handed, it might have been okay as long as the system running it was not a corrupt one. but i find it hard to believe it wasn't corrupt. Look at who was running the show- a murderous Sith who believed in all the wrong things. the only pure and honest thing about him was his self discipline to become that powerful.

The Empire isn't evil in and of itself, just extremely corrupted by the evil men in charge of it.

He was planning to eradicate the Jedi from day 1. The army of Clones Palpatine secretly created without anyone's knowledge until they were at the brink of war didn't just happen to have a secret, all encompassing order to turn around and kill every and all Jedis who were in command of their forces. It was programed into them from the very start. The order came after they tried to throw him out because he realized he couldn't fool them anymore.

It wasn't just coincidence the Jedi's found out who Palpatine really was either, he told Anakin and planned to use that event to finally push him to the dark side. After Anakin was his pawn and his Clone forces were on the brink of victory over the Trade Federation, he had the clones kill all the Jedi and had Anakin kill all the Trade Federation leaders who were secretly working for Palpatine.

    Droids.

You don't let just any joe schoe public official onto your flag ship, top of the line, top secret super weapon of inter-galatic death. You put your best, brightest and most loyal soldiers and officials.

The Empire is nothing without the Emperor. As the Emperor is evil incarnate, his entire reign is in and of itself evil. The man single-handedly toppled not one, but two massive, intergalatic democratic bodies of government (the Trade Federation was a democratic power similar to the Republic, which Palpatine completely destroyed with his war) to achieve his goal of universal domination.
