Wii is a fantastic system. That said, the games have been mostly lacking. The problem is they're catering to the casual gamer.
lol ... didnt mean to cause an up-roar I was just calling it as I have seen, read, and hear. 360 is a great machine but being rushed out to be 1st has put it at a disadvantage only a couple of year after its release ( looks over to my 360 with the RROD ). Wii yet again a great system but a gamecube with Innovative controls is not going to cut it for much long in the HD age. PS3 was at it's inception giving the tech it needs to outlast the two above systemsand be a main stay for a while. And I'm not a sony fanboy I own and play all three and like all of them for what they are just looking at things in the future.
There are third-party successes on the Wii. They're just rare because most companies just dump rushed shit on the system. Sega and Capcom have done pretty well with their Wii games, Resident Evil 4 selling a million copies is definately a success, especially considering it's the fourth release of that game. and max prime, the Wii is not a gamecube with innovative controls. the Wii is definately more powerful than the gamecube and the original xbox (the two most powerful systems last gen). They just didnt make as big a leap as sony and microsoft. Calling this the "HD age" doesnt make much sense, given that the attach rate for HD TVs is pretty damn low. the vast majority of people with the current game systems have standard definition TVs. If you ask me, MS and Sony are jumping the gun on the whole HD thing. I certainly don't give a shit about it. What do you mean the PS3 was given tech it needs to outlast the other systems? other than the storage that blu ray offers, it has no technical advantages over the 360. Best tech doesnt mean much anyways. PS2 proved that. it was the most successful system in the last generation, but also the least powerful.
They are ALL targeting casual gamers (what with games like Halo, Final Fantasy, Gears of War, Resistance, sports titles, etc.) The Wii is also targeting NON gamers, just like they did with the DS.
It's been 4 years already? Holy fuck time flies. I hope we don't get new console's for another 3 years. I'm really set on just having my Xbox 360 and my Wii. Really don't see the need for new console's so soon.
It's about a 5 year cycle for consoles, the 360 came out in 2005 so we won't be getting any new gen systems until late '10 at the very earliest, and I doubt well see any rumors until '09 at the earliest about anything.
do you remember those ps2 commericials where the guy had the PS9. it was a ball you grasped in your hand. can't wait till that comes out
Good lord, people are already talking about new systems? The current systems have such a small amount of decent games that my family wouldn't even have one if not for my brother (bought a 360).
Coming soon: Microsoft Xbox 720 Sony Playstation 4 Nintendo Ner (connects to the Wii to form..... well, you know.)
I agree with most of you and look to about 2010(boy that seems so far away) for the next consoule release. We might hear rumblings before that but that will most likely be all we hear. As for staying power the 360 is superior to the ps3. But that is in only two areas, one is memory, blu-ray means nothing if you do not have enough ram to load bigger textures in to it. Which makes blu-ray pointless other than to make a longer game. The other is in the chips, the cell is capable of being faster, but since it lack branch prediction. It can be much slower at the same time. So I am willing to apease the sony fanbois and call them equal. Which means mostlikely no new consoules till 2010 or possibly beyond. Personly I want more good games, not just a flashy new consoule.
A new Nintendo in '08? No way. The wii is still on the rise and will be all year. Nintendo can barely keep production of the wii to meet demand. It will be at least two years before we see a new Nintendo console.
I think 2010 is a bit early as well, for consoles at least. Expect 2011 - 2012. We will be getting more handheld options within two years, however.
I wouldn't consider any of those titles 'casual games'. Final Fantasy? Casual gamers don't spend 35-50 hours to complete one game. As for new systems, other than those quickly killed rumors of a Dreamcast 2, I have not heard a peep.
