So I'm looking to get into some TF comics . What's a good place to start? I read War Within awhile back and I liked the first half, got lost in the second (guess I don't know my TFs like I thought I did). So where should I start? I'm between the Classics books or the IDW collections, but if anyone has any other suggestions, I'm game.

That depends, are you looking for a classic G1 feel or something a bit different?

I'm pretty open. G1 is near and dear to my heart, but if those classics books are super dated, I might prefer something newer. Mind you, I've been reading all the classic Chris Claremont X-Men stories, and those are dated for sure, but I do have a tolerance for since they're just great stories if you can get past the dialogue and overall technique.

In that case you should read IDW. But the Marvel comics really pickup in the later issues.

I would personally recommend Idw stuff all the way as G1 stuff was ok but dated pretty badly and I wouldn't recommend them as comics based on there own merits to someone without any pre-existing nostalgic connection to them.

As for what Idw to go for; get the last stand of the wreckers mini as it is a great entry point and an awesome read. Next read #22 and 23 of the ongoing which if I've got the correct numbers is a great two parter staring megatron and Optimus which is often referred to as chaos theory then get the death of Optimus prime comic which is the starting point for the ongoings, more than meets the eye and robots in disguise. Mtmte is the pick of the two. The writer James roberts is the writer in my opinion responsible for the current renaissance in transformer comics so anything with his name on is worth checking out

IDW's More Than Meets The Eye and Robot's in Disguise, with a side jaunt of Last Stand of the Wreckers.

Honestly only if you're one of those people that REALLY has to read EVERYTHING in order to enjoy something.

While the collections are a great way to have everything it collects literally everything, bot the best bits and the garbage.

So for me personally it's better to just read the best bits, and then decide by yourself if you want the rest as well. Not to mention that all of the aforementioned series read very well as stand alone stories.

If you want to get the collections this august (I think?) the NEW series of collections titled "Phase 2" is coming out that collects MTMTE and RID so might want to start there is you don't want to get individual trades.

But that still means that you should totally get LSOTW because the hardcover is totally worth it.

Awesome, thanks everyone! I ordered Last Stand of the Wreckers, I'll look for those two single issues next time I go to pick up my comics.

Make sure it's the hardcover edition because that one has a LOT of bonus material that is really really good.

Oh yes! I own that hardback and it is such a lovely thing to own. I love the bonus material(especially the psych evaluations and the text stories) and I hope RiD and MTMTE get something similar in the future.

Fingers crossed that I can get either Roche or Roberts to sign it at AA this year.

So I'm reposting this here since it got no response in the general reading order thread and it seems appropriate.

I'm ready to bite the bullet on reading MTMTE from the beginning (I got all of Dark Cybertron during its Comixology sale and have physical copies of all the current season 2 books.)

I'll probably end up getting the IDW collections when they come out, but really want to jump back into the back issues NOW. Is there any reason to get the digital collected volumes of MTMTE over the individual issues or vice versa? Given what I currently have on Comixology the individuals are cheaper by a few bucks, but if the collected come with some extras they might be worth the extra few dollars.

    I LOVED the prose-stories.

Roberts is the only author that can actually make reading about Transformers without any visuals interesting and compelling and I'm really sad that he said he's not going to do it anymore because of the venomus reaction towards "The Sound of Breaking Glass" :(

Nah, there isn't much of a difference. Just some design drawings but nothing that would actually impact your understanding of the story.

The are so good! And stop writing them?! Last I heard(I think it was an Underbase interview) he said he was still going to do them so I hope that hasn't changed. I really hope that isn't true because those stories are lovely to read.

I would LOOOOVE is they did the Annual thing again but this like a PROPER UK style Annual with bios, and mini-comics and lots of prose stories.

I'd love if the did that, but chances are more people would hate it than like it.

I suppose if you get hooked, then go to the IDW HCs. But if you make it All Hail Megatron*, the worst is not yet over.

Wait, what?! What madness is this?

I just recently finished reading his massively long "Eugenesis" story and he's only gotten better with the prose stuff since then... I for one hope he keeps on writing the prose stuff as well as the comic scripts..
