Chicken Came Before the Egg: "Scientific Proof" - CBS News Wow. I'm so glad they put forth effort on this.
Gee, wonder how much money they sunk on that one when cancer's still around... what next, we find out why they crossed the road, too?
Ah, I don't know why I read this "article" then proceeded to the comments section. TLDR (for the comments on CBS News): We're doomed and I weep for humanity. That said, this is a poor article and it does not explain anything it claims. (Particularly as, known decades ago, evidence has pointed to the egg originating first.)
My job revolves around eggs and this is the sort of thing we joke about from time it time so I think it's fun to see a new angle on the question. Before getting all worked up about the time and money that went into this consider medical and scientific discoveries that where made looking at things seeming unrelated or the possibility of understanding how eggs are formed could lead to understanding how other things work. Science isn't always a straight line, but I guess all research can only go to cancer, sorry people with AIDS.
Maybe you fellows can correct me, but all the research seems to identify is the protein primarily responsible for the formation of the chicken egg. To say the chicken came before the egg (or vice versa) doesn't make much sense to me, considering the modern chicken, Gallus gallus*, is descended from a lineage of egg-laying birds and reptiles. Also considering each generation of any organism is a transitional form, at what point would you even be able to classify the new generation as a chicken: the non-chicken egg that produced the first chicken, or the chicken that produced the first chicken egg? * yea, I had to wiki that.
Agreed. You have to make other discoveries along the way, kind of like how the space program helped us make leaps and bounds in manufacturing and medical technologies.
This article talked about a specific protein used in shell formation. That's all. What is this I don't even - Coeloptera
I guess they're saying that because a protein in chicken eggs can only come from chickens, that chickens came first, and the egg that the first chicken came from was not technically a chicken egg but it's not very well written like so many of these "scientific" articles that aim at the lowest common denominator and it makes me want to freak out and AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHH!
Know what, you dont need to research proteins to figure this out... an egg cant hatch it's damn self so the chicken came first. And hey, didn't cost me a dime!
Who cares about finding a cure for Cancer when you know a chicken came before a egg. I always thought this was possible. I mean life starts from evolution and thus whatever evolved lays the egg.... Thanks a lot guys I want some KFC for dinner tonight.
No but you do need to research proteins to learn about the structure and make-up of egg shells so that some fucking PR department can shit out a stupid article to newspapers in an attempt to appeal to the braindead public and let a bunch of useless admin tools jerk each other off celebrating work they didn't do and never could do because they're a annoying hindrance to researchers and contribute nothing.
*Raises hand awkwardly* I thought the answer to life, the universe, and everything in it was 42? I guess this is somewhat interesting. I need to really catch up on my biology.
This, but it saves me time from typing it without looking it up. The question's answer has always been known when you break it down with evolution. Besides, what matters here is who fried the first chicken.
pure genius !!! This has always been either a simple or complex question to me. If you believe in creation it's easy. If you believe in something else, it's a lot more complicated. I think the most brilliant scientific train of thought is still Occam's razor, so i say the chicken was made and then laid the first egg.
