Viola Davis to Star as Amanda Waller in in Standalone HBO Max Series - Variety
....She doesn't really work without the Squad. If it's a Squad series by another name that's fine, but She's not a super spy. She needs people to direct and abuse.
Gee, there's a shock!
I rather watch the Wonder Twins movie
Can't wait to see Waller babysitting Adebayo after the stunt she pulled in Peacemaker.
While I do agree with you an actress like Viola Davis and descent writing can make this work, especially if this is a follow up to the Squad being exposed in Peacemaker.
I think the actress is good, but it's like those series where they want the superhero and the related characters, but they never get to be in costume and they end up using all the tropes and characters, but don't let them be a superhero and while it may work for a season, eventually you have all the baddies in full costume most of which they don't even meet till they are in costume in the comics and they are still avoiding the character being the superhero to the point it's just stupid. It basically comes out we are doing a superhero series, but superheros are stupid, so the hero will never become a superhero on our show. Which means that they look at the characters in contempt to begin with.
My opinion is unless there is some budget issue go in all the way, if not we end up with the kind of half assed shows we have been getting from the CW and other networks. This feels like they want the actress, but want to avoid using her in the way the comic character is known for. Which while it might be interesting, isn't really what fans want to see.
But again, it could be interesting, I'll wait for a trailer, but the way they are presenting it sends off warning bells, plus Amanda Waller was never even interesting enough on her own to support her own comic. That's why she's always with the squad, checkmate, or some other group.
I think it's a cool idea. Davis is great casting as Waller.
On the one hand... I think Waller has been a solid character for the most part in the DC films, plus the show about Peacemaker turned out better than I thought it would.
On the other, I'm pretty done with the 'DCEU' and would've rather see something involving Waller in the Reeves universe instead.
Though given she's one of my favorite antagonist characters I'm definitely not opposed to watching a show about her exploits, given the kind of stuff she'd get up to.
I have a strong suspicion that this might be an origin tale.
After Peacemaker, the one thought that didn't cross my mind was "Gee, I want to see more Amanda Waller".
Sony - What's the dumbest decision we can make?
Exec - Make a movie on a Spider-Man villain that appeared once in a special and cast someone no one has ever heard of to play him.
Sony - Excellent, no one can top this.
WB - Hold my beer. We're going to do an Amanda Waller series.
I'm of similar opinion as some of the earlier ones here in that while I like Davis and her portrayal of Waller a lot, the DCEU version of the character is not one I want to watch a series about and feel sympathy for.
The only way I'd invest in it is if it results in the formation of the 90's JLI. There's a version of her character in comics where she forms the JLA so there's a bit of precedent.
She appeared in the JLI a few times as a antagonist/ ally.
If this is written by the same idiots who did Peacemaker or the new Suicide Squad, count me uninterested.
Also, this role was MADE for CCH Pounder. So much so she voiced Waller in JLU. Same as in the Green Lantern movie and DC's stupid reboots, I hated how they made Waller into some pretty slim lady. Part of what made her interesting was that she did not get to the position of power she was in based on her looks, but because of her grit, determination and skills.
In this modern age of body positivity and whatnot, shouldn't DC insist that Waller be an old, heavy set black woman?
I disagree on the former. Gotham did it, and it worked well. Yes, we had events happen to Gotham and Jim and Bruce that happened to an adult Batman in the comics, but it was well written so I did not mind. And it wasn't that the show felt superheroes and supervillains are silly, it embraced the weird and even the mystical. It was just that Bruce was too young yet to be Batman, and the show was about how he gets to that point eventually.
(And rumors say that David Mazouz will come back as Batman in a continuation of the show soon).
Waller could be interesting if they make it some spy/FBI drama show with superheroes and villains being in the background. Maybe it'll be about her uncovering a conspiracy of Kobra infiltrating the FBI, etc...
The title of this series will be Waller.
Should have called it the Wall. Which used to be Waller's nick name.
OK, I'm confused. I thought they were scrapping the DCEU and starting over? Is this a Bumblebee type "kinda reboot, kinda prequel" deal, where they're going to pick and choose which bits are still canon, or is it more a Judi Dench M thing where they use the same actor in the same part, but in a different continuity?
Sooo... how the hell are we "rebooting" the DCEU and still having Viola Davis as Waller? Doesn't make much sense outside of Gunn treating what was likely a project he had planned pre-reboot different from everything else.
