Ok, im a complete idiot. I constantly do the following... See new tf toys... think ehh, im just not into that... About a year goes by and i find the same molds are now must own.. Currently im doing this with Classics Prime/UM/Jetfire/SDCC Nemisis and paying aftermarket prices for them. I had very little interest in these at the time of release and now i find the above molds to simply be MUST OWN! Now im looking at rodimus and some of the other classics deluxes and thinking the same thing... Dont even get me started on now considering paying aftermarket for FP City Commander which i also had zero interst in... (PS. PM me if you are selling one...) On that note... there wasnt one Animated toy that i had interest in at release and now find myself being drawn towards UM.. To sum this all up... Im an idiot. Am I the only one who does this financial nonsense?
I did that with Classics Voyager Prime. Why did I never get it when it was out? It's one of my most wanted figures now, along with Cybertron Crumplezone.
Oh, I think we've all done this with a figure here and there. I've had this happen to me more with minicons since I really wasn't into them from the beginning. So towards the end of Cybertron, I started picking up misc minicons here and there. Now I find myself paying stupid after market markups for these lil bastards that I could have gotten for less then $10 a set. I know better now!!
The smart thing to do is to pass them up and then pick them up on clearance. Too bad none of us are smart. When did crumplezone pick up in popularity?
Doesn't everyone? I passed on the BTs when they came out. Didn't like the look of them at all. Then my wife picked me up BT Grimlock for my birthday, oh, about 3 years ago. Loved it from the start, uber-pain-in-the-arse transformation, kibble-tastic backside, hollow torso and all. My LHS had a ton of the BTs for ridiculously low prices for the longest time. I kept passing them up though as at the time we were living in a single room in my in-laws'. Don't know what I was thinking, we had plenty of storage place at our business...so anyway, we finally moved into our new place and I thought Yes! I have some sweet custom designed display spaces now, Imma score me some BT goodness...they were all gone I passed on Alt Prime too, a really rare thing for me, as I'm generally quite the nut for Prime figures. It was freaking everywhere, marked down to half-price and I kept passing on it for something else. Finally, I was all set to get one, and it was gone. Naturally, I jumped all over BT Convoy when it was released...wasn't making that mistake twice!
I do this too. I will now buy figures and store them away just in case I want it down the road. If after 1-2 years I still do not find myself wanting it I will unload it. Sometimes it is not just high secondary market prices but at times you can't find what you are looking for.
Yea, this has definitely come up with me. Styles and interests change over time, but whats worse is when you buy a figure and loose interest in it.
I did this with the Cybertron line for about the first 4-5 months, only when I saw and bought one I really liked (Prime) did I start buying the rest of the series....
It's hard to even call it shortsighted, tastes just change. The opposite reaction is to go out and buy everything when it first comes out. I did this with the movie line hype, spent a bunch of money and don't really like them now. I'm going to lose money reselling them whenever I get around to doing it.
I passed on the first wave of classics, then grabbed them all on clearence. Then got most of wave 2 when it was new. Then passed on all classics 2.0. Now I got a real hate on for the new movie stuff and am thinking of restarting classics, of course I waited til there all but gone. Now I have to choose between after market prices or hope the reappear before Christmas. I'll probably wait, not find what I want and then pay even higher AMP's next year. I keep telling myself this is the fun part...
I'm sort of doing the same with Animated. Originally I only planned on getting Ultra Magnus but I eventually bought Swoop, Shockwave, Sunstorm, Swindle, Samurai Prowl, and Wreck Gar. It's cool because now I can actually find a good deal on some loose bots in the Junkion.
I've done this with a few, but the one I regret the most is KP Rodimus. At the time I just got into collecting and was like "I'm not paying that much money for a TF"... I hadn't cought the Alt/BT bug yet and thought that buying a Voyager was splurging
I remember putting MP Starscream in my cart at WalMart ages ago, but realizing I didn't have that much cash on me to get him and groceries. Figured he'd be there for awhile since it was so expensive. I was wrong. Ended up getting him from the exchange nearly a year later for a great price. Been doing that a lot lately with figures I passed on earlier. It's always better to get it now than regret it later.
Not with toys, but I did this with Crystal Pepsi. I liked the stuff, but never stocked up, figuring it would always be around. Then one day...empty shelves. The only TFs I normally pass up are Japanese figures like the MP figures or the like, as I figure they'll make a cheaper, stateside version eventually. Except for MP Megs- that was an automatic purchase.
