Might have to check it out this week. Still haven't watched Shin Godzilla yet either.

You don't need to watch Shin first if you haven't to watch this, completely different universes. That's how I did it, I barely watched Shin in the beginning of this year for the first time after watching Minus One over the holidays.

Oh, I know they're separate. Just saying I haven't even watched it yet. Haven't watched Toho's Godzilla movies since the Millennium Era.

Don't know the source, but now they're saying the "Minus Color" version will also be on Netflix "sometime later this Summer".

At first I wasn't too impressed with the around mixing of the dub but that scene with Nado in the board room the night before the attack they added some really good reverb to reflect the acoustics.

Dub Akiko was very cute too.

I think a lot of people are going to judge it based on Shikishima's scream at the halfway point of the movie, which of course the dub doesn't capture as well. But by the end of the movie you kind of don't even realize you're watching a dub.

The scream didn't carry the same weight and emotion of the scene as it did in Japanese, but it was a decent attempt on the actor's part.
That last part is especially true, I was watching the lip flaps the whole time.

I didn't bother watching the Netflix -1.0 dub. I enjoyed the 1954 original in Japanese so it only seemed right to watch it the first time in its native language.

An incredible movie it is. There's so much dread and tragedy put into it and I think this is the first film I've seen in a while where the main character is engaging. Not Godzilla movies, but movies in general. So many things nowadays seem to stick with a few stock tropes that seeing his survivor's guilt and Godzilla come manifest of his internal war felt like the first clean breath you take when you visit the forest.

It makes stuff like GvK look like chumps for not putting in effort on the human side of things. Those movies don't even do the monster fights well, honestly.

I’m surprised the end credits are still in Japanese.

    Dang good film.

Hopefully we'll see a US physical release. I do want a copy. And hopefully it includes both Minus One and Minus Color.

Kinda also wished Netflix had Minus Color too.

Just watched it again. Was gonna give the dub a try while I cleaned up but I ended up leaving it in Japanese and then around the first boat encounter I stopped cleaning and just sat down to watch it. :lol

I was telling my girlfriend, who knows absolutely nothing of Godzilla nor really cares to, about the movie and she's so confused. Her only knowledge of Godzilla is tiktok memes and clips from the Monsterverse, but it got us talking about how absolutely bizarre it is that Godzilla is as versatile an entity as it is. Like in the last ten years we've had Godzilla is a superhero, a tortured victim of circumstance, a fourth-dimensional quantum entity, and an outright villain with no sympathetic qualities at all. And yet none of them feel even the slightest bit wrong or misplaced.

Honestly, if I could levy but a single criticism towards this film:

I kinda don't like that it sequel-baits the end with Noriko having that strange infection on her neck and Godzilla's chunk starting to regenerate. I know the latter is a reference to GMK, as well as just the oft-recurring nature of Godzilla as unstoppable, but unless we actually get a sequel I'm kind of on the fence about it being left open. Like, is Noriko gonna just die? After all that struggle to survive and Koichi thinking she was dead at one point? Not sure how I feel about that. Feels like a similar thing to Shin where the last shot showed the offshoots frozen mid-budding on his tail. Of course I could just be overthinking it and her infection thing is just Godzilla's radiation they mentioned, and it just looks that way to make it more obvious that it's caused by him.

Well if they had to do a sequel, they could pull something akin to Godzilla Returns.
