Yeah, I've never understood that. How is a giant gorilla named Kong okay, but King Kong is breaking copyright? Also, WB owns the original King Kong movie, so wouldn't that mean Universal is infringing on them? Not to mention Universal hasn't done anything with the character in 15 years, so surely they can't get too upset if WB called it King Kong.

 

From what I know about Kong's copyright thing it's pretty complicated. Basically some court thing in the 70's had Universal basically owning the merchandising rights to King Kong as a whole thus including the term King Kong labeled in front of them. Which means that while yes you can technically do Kong adaptations and such, you can't exactly use the full name King Kong unless you aim to have Universal sue you on the front. Maybe I'm not explaining this right but still I hope that it does explain your question a bit better. If you want to look into this more try googling it up.

I went through summaries of this legal confusion even I lost track on who owns what exactly. Some say Kong, as in the character is public domain, others said the characters is owned by RKO, one can't be sure.

Hopefully it's at least watchable, but with characters like that, I'm not sure I care.

 

Hope it turns out better than their last animated efforts. Judging by the character designs, it seems this will be quite stylized.

 

I'm not a fan of those human designs, hopefully that's not how they actually look. Godzilla looks awesome though.

 

Set it in modern times. Have Godzilla be like he is in the normal films. Basically just have it like a normal live action film but not limited to a budget/suit actor what they can do in live action.
