I've read the novelization, it's not too demonstrably different from the movie, though of course it does add a few details here and there. It is different, but we're not talking about the level of difference between the novel "The Hunt for Red October" and the movie here, and while for me the novel didn't really change my enjoyment of the movie much.... YMMV.

Personally I thought it made the movie better but to each and their own.

I think I'm just confused how reading the book made the movie's lifeless cliche characters better.

Because when it's a book you can insert as much exposition and character thoughts as possible to explain everything they feel about.

But how does that improve them in the movie?

But those are two different mediums. The book is not the same as the movie. They need to be graded as two separate entities. Just because they are better written in the book does not instantly make them well written characters in the movie. Shitty writing is still shitty writing. And if you have to go to a third party source to explain that shitty writing, then that is even shittier writing. Face it, King of the Monsters is just a shit movie.

Not everyone has to hate the movie.

I didn't say you have to hate the movie. A movie can be dogshit and can still be enjoyable. Godzilla vs Gigan is a prime example of that. It's a shitty ass movie, but an entertaining one nonetheless.

Hell, even though KotM is a shitty movie, I'd still rank it around #20 for Godzilla movies.

Imperfect as KOTM is I still can't see on how it's in any way shape or form deserving of the horrible movie title it's been given especially since we've had movies last year that did a lot worst in comparison. It's clear that many people behind the film really cared enough about the Godzilla lore to give each monster a moment to shine and most of the human characters are written solidly enough to care and understand. It's not like it went out of it's way to bash the very source it's based upon and insult fans.

Yeah, KotM was awesome, but Endgame has it beat in that regard.

    Uh... no.

Endgame had character development and a plot. KotM was just people doing stupid things while monsters fight.

Endgame felt incredibly rushed and Fat Thor hurt the movie so much and the plot was so predictable. There was no surprise to Endgame. The final battle was incredibly boring. The entire movie was too CGI heavy.

Wow, I've never known someone to be completely wrong on all levels before, but there it is. Huh, weird. Anywho, KOTM is a great movie if you're looking for popcorn, but there's no plot to it what-so-ever and the character moments in the movie are completely one dimensional that it's impossible to relate. Endgame, while it does suffer from some bloated scenes in the middle, is still a pretty great movie that had high stakes, and still ended with a WTF moment with Iron Man dying.
