I mean... we already have 29 Godzilla movies directed by Japanese directors. Not to knock them, but we know what their flavor of movies are like.

Saw it today, and the first showing was busier than I expected it to be.

I'm definitely sad to see the weekend numbers though, as this was a really fun movie.

    Agreed with Mako Crab.

I personally felt it was good, but not mind blowing. 3/4 stars overall. Some aspects were improved from the prior movie like seeing more of the kaiju/titans, but I felt that was going to be the next logical step anyways when doing a sequel to these type of films. On the other hand, other aspects like the overall story and pacing, I did not feel were as strong as Edward's efforts. I appreciated all the throwbacks and nods to the various films in the series, but felt it lacked originality in creating their own vision rather than reusing concepts and themes from past films such as
Powered up burning Godzilla concept, which I felt was presented too early in the series; sudden introduction of the oxygen destroyer; Mothra sacrificing herself for Godzilla like Rodan did in Heisei Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 2 or the missing Ghidorah head a la Heisei Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, were cool to see as nods, but I don't see all these things together as creating a unique vision for this universe.

The actors performances were all fine, but
the offscreen death of Watanabe's partner, Sally Hawkin's character was offputting.

Disappointed to see it not make such a strong debut domestically, but hope it recoups funds for installments past Godzilla vs. Kong.

Although the monster action was turned up definitely, I was distracted way more with the family drama and the ridiculous reasoning of the mother to side with the ecoterrorist. On paper, the speech may have sounded reasonable, but on the big screen I could not reasonably see her decision to awaken all the Titans as a positive way for her to deal with the loss of her son and address restoring "balance," since King Ghidorah/Monster Zero was already seen as another Godzilla level threat (aside from the latter reveal that he may not be from Earth).

I think still prefer the 1998 movie. It had something the 2 newer ones don't have: heart!

Just got back from seeing it. I absolutely loved it! Best Godzilla movie in a long time. The monsters looked fantastic, and I loved seeing updated versions of some of my favorites like Ghidorah, Rodan and Mothra. I felt like a kid again, and the original theme was literally music to my ears. The fights were great and the human story was serviceable for a Godzilla movie. Yeah, sure, there were cheesy one-liners and I wanted to smack the mother across her face, but those are minor quibbles. That final image before the credits rolled was awesome! Overall, I really enjoyed it and can't wait to own it on blu-ray.

I am very disappointed by the box office numbers. It deserves higher than a $49 million opening weekend. Hopefully, it'll have long legs but I'm afraid with the summer season in full swing that will be hard to do with so many other movies coming out.

It wasn't off-screen, but it was definitely a blink and you'll miss it.

    I really wish they didn't...

...kill off Ken Watanabe 's character. I thought he had a great death scene, but he's about the only character in these movies that I find memorable. I did like Millie Bobby Brown's character, but I'm not sure how much usefulness she'll have moving forward. Ken Watanabe's character had a direct connection to Godzilla, I kind of wish they saved his death until the final Godzilla movie. It's sad knowing he won't have a role in the story moving forward. Hopefully they can find someone good to replace him.

I was actually aware of KOTM having a weak box office opening for some time but I didn't want to bring it up until there's more proof as well as see if it changes. I'm very worried since it would mean that after Godzilla vs Kong there won't be any more Monsterverse movies and that people wouldn't be keen on seeing Godzilla vs Kong. I don't want that to happen cause right now the Monsterverse is the best possible way we can get Godzilla movies for a more mainstream manner. I know Toho's going to do their World of Godzilla movies but still I don't want it to end this way.

That being said Sunday right now isn't over yet so there's a chance it'll pick up the pace today as well as this week assuming Dark Phenoix and Secret Life of Pets 2 don't damage the chances. Not to mention it's doing very well in Asia Japan especially with it being on it's number 1 movie rank.

It's also #1 this weekend, the Box Office just isn't that strong. It's not a slam dunk but we'll have to wait and see.

I'll reiterate now that the movie is out that I would definitely go for a Zhang Ziyi-lead Mothra movie.

Wow Bradley Whitford is actually a really good actor but in KotM he sucks the life out every scene he was in. Granted all his lines were pure garbage.

In a movie full of easter eggs, my favorite had to be the twist on 1954 Serizawa's fate. Runner-up would be when the the Argo blocks the audience's view of the battle, in what I presume to be a "see how completely damn stupid that looks?" jab at Gareth Edwards.

I loved the monster scenes, but yeah the majority of the human story was dumb. Not 1998/2014 levels of dumb, but I was hoping that Shin Godzilla would've given Legendary something to shoot for in terms of how to handle the non-kaiju scenes.

It was still #1 though. Just because they predicted more doesn't make it a failure. This isn't Avengers.

Tristar's Godzilla had a $55 million opening weekend. Granted, that was a 4-day Memorial day weekend, but that was over 2 decades ago. 2014 Godzilla had a $93 million opening weekend. Kong had a $61 million opening weekend.

I feel like those films may have had bigger advertising. I haven't seen KOTM get the same push.

It's underperforming, but at this point it isn't necessarily a disaster. Doesn't exactly matter to me since Godzilla Vs Kong is probably too far along to pull the plug. They already wrapped principal photography.
