I agree, truce would not have worked given the characters from the movies. I think Megatron is totally caught offguard at how fast Prime gets up and hits him considering OP is missing his arm. At least thats the way I'd like to believe why he went down so fast.

Megatron's lines were stupid. Period. Beyond imagination.

If anything, I would have CRIPPLED Megatron and kept him under chains.

    JUST TO DO SOMETHING INTERESTING.

Bsides, death is too good for him.

He was probably expecting Optimus to act as stupidly as other Optimuses have, and go for the truce like a dog after a rubber ball. Either that or for Optimus to chew him out before attacking. Both options would have bought Megatron time enough to fight back and hold is own. An immediate axe to the face wasn't on his list of expected responses (though he really should have known better, given the ass-kickings he's received and seen).

I agree with the OP. It's too risky and unrealistic considering the leader of the 'Cons' history.

And what did he do once the Fallen died? He continued seeking total rule over everything he saw.

Megatron had to die at the end of the trilogy, the story would be unresolved if he didn't.
I'm pretty sure we have a concensus that the 'truce' was ingenuine, and not in the cards.

A lot of complaints regarding the final scene are from people dissapointed that Optimus and Megatron didn't actually fight in the end.
Instead, Optimus quickly dispatches Megatron as soon as he is offered a respite. Which noticeably pales when compared to Optimus and Sentinel's Prime Smackdown.

I completely agree. I don't think there's anything to argue with here. Like I said on some other threads, people are too caught up in the moment thinking Prime should be that "nice guy" when taking that truce would have made Prime a naive fool.

Sometimes you have to learn that some people will never change especially when they're genocidal tyrants of the solar system :)  Prime, I salute you! Good job yet again!

Btw, I do agree there should've been a longer fight.. I was also peeved about that. 2 ultimate rivals getting a 10 second battle is lame. But regarding sparing Megatron? Hell no.

I have no idea why that line was in the film. It made no sense whatsoever in the context and felt stupid and out of place.

    In the novel, however...

The novel handled it nicely. I'll still prefer that ending.
Seriously, by this point, Starscream is dead, Soundwave is dead, Barricade is dead, Shockwave is dead, Pretty much EVERYONE is dead... Megatron is a hobo with half a face and some mental issues. I don't think he could have posed much more of a threat. I honestly would have liked it if Megatron bridged to Cybertron alongside the Wreckers, and began a slow process of restoring Cybertron.

I just think it would help those with Prime issues to simply read the book. In the book, there is so much more from his perspective and you can clearly see how the events have shaped his actions and just what he feels about it.

He never enjoys doing what he must any more than any normal soldier does.

Seriously, Megs beat Starscream with his own severed arm in ROTF, if that's how he treats his friends how could he ever be serious about redemption?

The "moral" hangups people are having are quite laughable. Lots of people whine about it, but nobody can say how things realistically could have gone any better.

Oh wait, he didn't have to go after heads so much...never mind the fact that that seems the best way to kill just about anything, especially a giant ass robot that's trying to do the same thing to you.

If anything, going for the head is actually quicker and cleaner. So one could say he was in fact being merciful. How many warrior cultures considered that an honorable way to die?

I guess people just can't get over the one simple fact that these movies are no cartoon. In the cartoons Prime could have all those jolly good morals, but here in a real life, real WAR setting it just doesn't work. Any more than Megs being a handgun would have.

Preachy words and cheesy taunts while a bunch of robots fired guns and hit nothing does not make for a fun movie.

When you've died once, been rebuilt, then almost killed again, but coming out alive to your regret with half a face? And then getting bitched out by Sentinel? And being filled with a bit of hope upon seeing your home planet to where you could amost reach out and touch it?
I'm sorry... but I would just give up at that point and drop everything.
