Love her or hate her, Hillary's now in wax

Amid the hoopla surrounding Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's possible 2008 presidential run, Madame Tussauds' famed wax museum has secured a unique spot.

A life-sized figure of the former first lady-turned-politician was unveiled there Thursday, complete with a campaign-style balloon drop, flags and a ceremonial rendering of "Hail to the Chief." Several volunteers _ mostly employees of the museum _ stood by carrying "Hillary 2008" signs.

Clinton's smiling wax doppelganger wears a turquoise blue pantsuit, arm extended in a wave. Wax statues of President Bush and Clinton's husband, President Bill Clinton, stand nearby.

Museum manager Janine DiGioacchino said artists at the original Tussauds museum in London had poured over hundreds of video clips and still photos to create an accurate depiction.

"I think it's one of our best," DiGioacchino said. "You need to look at her teeth and her eyes. I think they're fantastic."

The display also offers a ballot booth, where visitors are asked to vote on two questions: Would you vote for a woman for president? And, Will Hillary be the first woman president? A computer screen above the Clinton statue beams the results.

During the ceremony, the results ran 71-29 percent in favor of voting for a woman president, and 55-45 percent yes on whether Clinton would be the first.

The Clinton display will reside in a wing dedicated to former presidents and other public figures, including Fidel Castro, Princess Diana and the Dalai Lama.

The Times Square museum currently holds 182 figures, including depictions of hip-hop singer Beyonce, Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong and actress Teri Hatcher. Before the Clinton figure, the most recent addition to the Tussauds collection _ a Rockette _ came in December.

Sen. Clinton, who avoids publicly discussing her potential presidential ambitions, had meetings scheduled in Washington and did not attend the unveiling.

"We invited her," DiGioacchino said.

I have heard that those wax figgures are very life-like. That is all I will say on the subject, less I get into politics.
