Oh don't be so working class. Take a hint from the middle class - emotional abuse can be just as damaging and doesn't leave any physical evidence behind! Make sure you tell her that without you she's worthless on a daily basis. You have to break her and make her believe that if you were to leave her entire life would collapse, that you are doing her a huge favour by staying with her and tolerating her pathetic existence. Once she's huddled in the corner of the kitchen crying then you know you've done your job right.
I didn't think the BDSM reference derailed the thread, really. As has been said many times, relationships are complicated. Kinky folks might actually have an advantage in that we understand in advance that relationships are a negotiation. We may also have an advantage in communication. (There's something to be said for the concept of a safe word.) I wish I'd learned these lessons years ago. (Then again, I don't exactly have my choice of partners. Face that only a mother can love and all that jazz.)
