Got both of these guys finished around the same time so I figured I'd post them both at once! (Sorry for the crap setup, the place I normally take pictures in is under construction.) Gnashteeth is the result of Blackarachnia attempting to make a techno-organic clone of Grimlock. Part of the proccess included upgrading the clone's proccessor so that the resulting Predacon would be much smarter than its template. However, Blackarachnia was unaware of Megatron's role in the creation of the Dinobots, and that some of the warlord's code remained in their systems. As such, the clone- dubbed 'Gnashteeth'- ended up being a bizzare hybrid of Grimlock's raw strength and Megatron's ambition. I know I'm FAR from the first person to make a BW Megs out of Grimlock, but thought he was worth sharing regardless. Gnashteeth (named after Megs' appearance in Beast Wars Uprising) is based on Megatron's Season 1 design, and as such is mostly purple. It wasn't until after I started painting that I saw a custom based on his Transmetal form, which DOES fit a bit better... buuuuuuuut I wanted to go with a season 1 homage. I put a fair bit of teal on him, putting use to a paint pen I had bought for a different custom but ended up not using. I really, REALLY like how it compliments the purple. His head is from the Battle Begins 2-pack deluxe Megatron. I thought about using a Voyager Megatron head since both that mold and Grimlock's heads are attached by mushroom pegs, but it turned out the pegs were different sizes. So I went with plan B- you see, if you simply unscrew Deluxe Megatron's torso you can remove both his head and the ball-joint socket it's attached to. So for Gnashteeth I hollowed out Grimlock's neck hole to a square shape and wedged the socket in there. No glue required- it fits snugly between the tubes that his screws go in! Beast Mode! Not much to say, other than I'm happy how it turned out. My Animated Predacons! (So far, at least...) Shattered Glass Grimlock and the other two Dinobots were created by the evil scientist Isaac Sumdac based on tech reverse engineered from Optimus Prime. Sumdac intended for the Dinobots to be prototype attack drones that would be too dumb to refuse his orders. However, the Optimus went behind his back and gave the Dinobots super intelligence! The now famous Dinobots instead staked out on their own, hiding away on a nearby island. I can't take credit for his deco- it's based directly on artwork by Derrick J Wyatt himself. Closeup of his sword. Sadly the flames can't pop out cause I lost one of the internal pieces while painting it. Oops. Also I messed up the paint. Double oops. Shattered Glass Animated Dinobots! Snarl and Swoop actually aren't customs- they're the Takara Adventure redecos with new faction logos. Yay repurposing!
Thanks for the kind words everyone! Haha thanks, I wish they were. Granted they'd probably be a lot more expensive.
Now these are just too awesome! The color choices and modifications add so much life and character, and thereby capture the spirit of Animated very well.
Glad I could be an inspiration! I lucked out and managed to get the TAV Dinobots relatively cheap, but that was some time ago so I have no idea what they go for now. Thank you!!! I've been drawing designs for Animated pretty much since it debuted, so I'm glad to hear some of the tricks I picked up from doing that has translated to physical customs.
