My sister and I went to visit a close family friend's house and one of the kids asked if he and I could watch a movie. So I let him scroll through my movie library, and he wanted to watch Age of Extinction. I told him, "Hey since you want to watch Transformers, let me show you a movie I know you've never seen before." And so we watched the 1986 G1 movie. Keep in mind that this 10-year-old's main exposure to Transformers is through the movies, the Prime series, and the Fall of Cybertron video game, and he does watch a decent amount of anime to recognize good animation. Here are the comments he made cuz I found them pretty funny/interesting to hear: -*Unicron approaches Lithone* Wow, Unicron is huge! -Him: Why does Unicron eat so much? Me: Well, why do you eat a lot? -*Lion's Transformers Theme plays* I like this song. -*During the opening narration* This is really good animation even though it's old. -"It is the year 2005" They thought there would be robots in 2005? -Optimus sounds pretty much the same. -Doesn't Bumblebee lose his voice box? -Ooh, Cliffjumper's alive! -So that's what Soundwave sounds like. -I feel like they were really creative in the 80s. -*Sees Ultra Magnus* He kinda looks like Optimus. -*Hears Blurr talking* He's hard to understand -*Sees G1 pink Arcee* I didn't know they had girl Transformers back then too. -The whole city is transforming! -Starscream's voice hurts my ears. -*Insecticons eat the door* Are those Scraplets? -*Rumble and Frenzy attack Perceptor* Either they're really small, or they're really big. -Is Grimlock in this? -*Excited gasp at the Dinobots* -The only one who did something was the triceratops one. -Optimus: "One shall stand....." Him: One shall fall. -Wait, Optimus dies in this?!?! -*Decepticons throw out Megatron in space* Megatron is gonna come back and kill Starscream I just know it. -I think Soundwave should be leader. -Where's Primus? -*Unicron approaches Moon Bases* Goodbye, other planets! -*laughs at Blurr's struggle with the Dinobots.* -*Hot Rod drives underwater* How does that work? -*Sees exo-suit* I wish that existed in real life. -*Kup and Hot Rod hand out Energon* I wonder what Energon tastes like. -*gasps at Sharkticons eating Kranix* But.....he said innocent. -*Dare to be Stupid dance sequence* haha this is weird. -*Eyes widen as Unicron transforms* -*Unicron eats Galvatron* That was a dumb idea. -*Ship goes through Unicron's eye* That must've hurt. -Wait, Rodimus Prime? -*Autobots leave Unicron* Haha another hole in his eye. -*laughs at Unicron's head coming off* Of course, he loved it! I don't think it made him any more of a fan than he already is, but I'm glad to see that he's starting to take more of an interest in our favorite Robots in Disguise.
That's pretty damn awesome. My kids had little to no interest, even before Bay. "The 80's were terrible...why do you like this" was their primary reaction. Them millennials, I tells ya.
Don't we all, kid. Don't we all. That's a shame. Luckily for me, my kids like the originals. Though, not as much as the modern incarnations, mind you!
Me too, kid. Me too. But seriously, this was great to read. I didn't have that many reactions as a kid. I just turned off my head and watched things.
Born in '92. Never cared much for Transformers despite my oldest brother being -really- into Beast Wars when we were kids. Even after the first two Bay films I was kind of neutral on the whole thing, but then Dark of the Moon came along and changed everything. That being said, I wish I could have experienced the 80's first hand to a point. Primarily for the music - but the 80's and early 2000's were, in my opinion, the raddest shit ever.
I didn't actually see the movie until like 2003 or 2004 - and as someone who had never seen the cartoon and grew up with the Marvel comic alone, it was a somewhat different experience, and not just because I was around 20 then.
