Hi folks, I know this is kind of vague, but does anyone remember some books from the '80s that were just sheets of paper you could punch out and build models of robots? I remember I had two of them. One was a book that had four models. One was a yellow robot, one was a blue one, and then there were two monsters. The other book was a paper model of Grimlock in T-Rex mode, but I am pretty sure it was not an official Transformers product licensed by Hasbro. Does anyone remember these? I am pretty sure I got them either from those Scholastic book order forms they gave elementary school kids in the US in the '80s or from a Scholastic book fair, where they would wheel metal shelves full of Scholastic books for the same kids to buy at school once or twice a year.
I don't remember what it was called, but I had the dinosaur one. It was a silver Trex that you could actually transform into a robot. I do remember that the robot wasn't Grimlock
I know they exist as I've seen one on eBay a few times, with Optimus Prime on the cover in his G1 box art pose. I also know there were jigsaws which not only came together to make a picture but they also 'transformed' into a robot using the picture on the flip side of the pieces. You could get Starscream, Bluestreak and Ultra Magnus.
Hmmm. So no one knows what they were called? I really want to track them down but it is hard without a title.
Well, the only one I know of is called "The Transformers Punch Out Book" by Marvel Books. If there are others I haven't seen them.
I figured it out! The one with four models, two robots and two monsters is called Build & Learn Space Creatures 4 Funtastic Models It's this: Amazon.com: Build & Learn Space Creatures 4 Funtastic Models Insect Creature, Blue Robot, Plant Creature, Orange Robot (Build and Learn): Watermill Press: Books Now I just need to figure out what the one with ripoff Grimlock was called.
Actually, I had one of those books when I was young, but it's not the one you've linked. The thing had just one robot that transformed into a spaceship. It was about 12" tall. You could take off it's head when it transformed, but I don't remember much else about it, other than it was dark blue. I think it would have been about 1988 or 1989 when I got it.
I remember something similar, but mine was a red robot. Octon or something like that. Made of cardboard parts that slotted together, you could slot different parts in different configurations for different modes. The book itself was an activity book with mazes and wordsearches. Don't remember much else. Book's long gone by now.
I just re-read the first post, and I got my book from exactly the same place, a Scholastic book fair. The year after I got a science projects book, which I KNOW I still have, annoyingly.
The blue one I MIGHT have. The robot was something like Zartax or something? Let me check when I get home.
I had one that made a robot T-rex. wasnt grimlock. I remember it having all sorts of unnecessary technical detailing on it. I think it may have been purple or blue? Maybe it was silver. don't know. I barely remember it as-is. But I do know that if it transformed, I never managed to do it. think I had another one that made a generic white sci-fi space ship. or was it in the same book? again. no idea.
