This has probably been discussed elsewhere, but I've recently been wondering if we'll see many / any third parties follow TT's (some might say slavish) cartoon accuracy. What does anyone think?

The toon accuracy is what drove me away from TT.

I hope not as well. It wouldn't be a smart move on their part, because they've (or at least some of them) carved a niche out for themselves by offering their products as alternatives to the super toon accurate Takara.

Gotta side with the hope not crowd here, 3P are still making masterpieces, not plastic animation models, and that's the way I like it.

If that's where the money is, I wouldn't doubt some companies would do it.

Since 3P is largely focusing on fitting in with MP's, aren't they already going for toon accuracy?

I like the figures to look like the cartoon characters within reason, but as to the discussion around level of detail which is generally what people mean when they refer to Takara's recent trend in plainer designs, i prefer a bit more detail and am glad most 3P are including the details.

I don't really like the use of the term "toon accurate" in this context. Like Optimus thighs were white in the cartoon but that's just because they couldn't represent silver any better than that in the animation. I wouldn't consider white thighs to be "toon accurate" any more than I consider coloring Grimlock blue to be "comic accurate" (blue with dark shadows is just how they represented black in 80's comic books). What we're calling "toon accurate" is a misguided effort to try to make them actually cartoons instead of what the cartoons were always trying to represent.

That said, yes it will probably happen to at least some extent. TT is still making money on MP toys and the 3p companies are competing with that. I don't think they'll all make the switch but Tt is showing that there's money in it so their competitors will surely try it too.

I agree with the post by Snaku above. I don't like the term "toon accurate" to describe Takara's new direction because I think Takara's been pretty toon accurate since MP-10 and most of the MP figures 3Ps have put out are as well.

I think Takara has chosen a certain interpretation of the toon that is different than what they had previously been doing that focuses on the simplicity of the cartoon. As a result it leaves off painted tail lights, uses white instead of silver (because the toon couldn't use silver) and gives you poorly drawn logos as an option.

I think what MP-10 and similar figures like MP-08 or FTs dibots (and many other 3P figures) represented was also toon accurate. It was a different interpretation of the toon, through the lens of what the toon was trying to represent rather than what the toon was actually able to show.

As for the original question, I suppose some will go with the new Takara direction but others won't. It's not a zero sum game, really.

NO NO NO NO NO NO.

    NO.

They sure as shit better fucking not. The god damn animation designs were nothing but piles of colored blocks stacked on top of each other and so many characters were ridiculously similar looking due to budget and production laziness and the other crap that made the toon look as dated and awful as it does now.

God almighty I wish people would just let it go, I wish takara would unfuck themselves and we could go back to when all MP's had a sense of good design as their primary goal above all else.

I think a mix is great. But, honestly I love MP Ironhide, Ratchet, Inferno, and I can't wait to get Grapple.

I'm with you all :)  For me Fanstoys continue to strike the perfect balance (insects / dinos especially). I've not bought any TTs since Thundercracker, and am still undecided about the new Megatron. At least there's a bit more detail there...

I'd love that as an option alongside the existing offerings. I adore toon accuracy and would absolutely buy more 3P if it were a thing more often.

3P companies tend to listen to their customers more so than TT seems to. They kind of have to because, unlike with TT where some percentage of people will buy it just because it has their name on the box, many people will pass on a 3P offering if they don't like it. It will depend on what the masses want/buy.

There's nothing ironic about it. Do you refuse to buy any modern toys because they're not the original G1 toys? The original cartoon did bring us together but isn't anything to write home about visually. What's wrong with wanting the franchise to advance with technology? Why do we have to live 30+ years ago?
