$30 Million Worth Of Funko Pops Are About To Be Dumped In A Landfill

"Funko has released its full-year 2022 financial results, and they’re not great. Whereas last year the company made a healthy $17.4 million profit, this year they’ve made almost a $50 million loss. In a call with investors, Funko CEO Brian Mariotti blamed "macro factors and Funko-specific issues" for the loss and confirmed layoffs and other cost-cutting measures will be taken to stem the bleeding."

Imagine being an archeologist a thousand years from now and finding the little beady-eyed things in a hole in the ground. It'd probably be confusing and slightly creepy.

 

I need to find my surprised hat.

 

You know the scene from Indiana Jones and The Lost Ark where Indy gets the idol and triggers the boulder sequence?

Replace the idol with a POP figure - painted entirely gold. And then replace the boulder with one made entirely of other POP figures.

 

I only bought 1 pop and it was a gift for my nephew to which his younger brother destroyed.

 

Sooooo Funko were dumbasses and over-estimated just how much demand there would be for pops, overproduced, couldn't sell the fuckers and had to store them incurring massive rental fees and a slew of new employees just to do deal with the overstock.



I feel insanely bad for the people about to lose their jobs but I also can't help but laugh watching Funko blunder so badly.

And the younger brother did a favor to his big brother.

 

Why not give them away or recycle them instead? They shouldn't be allowed to just throw them in a landfill.

Funny thing, in DOOM 2016, they put in pop figures in the game as collectibles. DOOMguy and the various enemies.

 

It was a joke. I don't know your nephew, I had no idea why he destroyed his brothers pop figure.

DOOM 2016 had the mini Doom guys to collect, Eternal had the chibi monster figures, and no they WERE NOT POPS. These had character and didn't look like they wanted to STEAL MY SOUL TO GAIN SENTIENCE!!

 

Nah, DOOM and Eternal just had chibi-style toys. They actually had, y'know, cute designs and weren't insipidly generic like Funkos.

 

A few years back I went to GameStop and saw a whole wall dedicated to the Pops. I haven’t gone to GS in about 4 years so I don’t know if they still have them.

in one point i wanted to get the Marvel collection but I was already collecting other things and couldn’t afford getting into pop figures. I’m glad I didn’t get into it.

 

^This. How about donating them to various charities like Toys for Tots, St. Jude, Salvation Army and Goodwill? There are millions of underprivileged children that would love a Funko pop and by giving them away, the company could generate some good PR in the in addition to raising their stock. Dumping them all is just asinine to me.

 

Yeah it's the basis for what looks like a bad Doom mobile game.

It's really just a reskin of another mobile game called Archero.

 

I'm sure they'll be in good company with the hundreds of thousands of movie Bumblebee figures that have been discarded over the last 16 years Hasbro has.. milked.. that character with the exact same alt mode.

I still think a child could actually play with a funko pop, it can still be a toy even if there are better ones. It’s not completely worthless like an NFT
