Today was definately a "different" day for me.Saw an ad in the paper that the Delta Winnipeg would be holding a career fair from 2-6pm.Now the Delta is rated as one of Canada's Top 50 Employers

Now granted I went to the fair on a larf.I figured "Hey why not" 1st is that I'm glad I listened to my gut and dressed up.I had no proof but being a posh hotel I figured there would be onsite interviews. And there were & I'm not exaggerating when I say that I was one of the few who dressed nice(I wore a suit)

I applied for Host,Server,Reservations Agent and Guest Service agent.

So first I met with Robert the Food and Service Department manager. He stated that although I'm qualified for the positions I applied that there was some STIFF competition. How stiff you might ask?The other people who applied for these positions had prior experience in other upscale Restaurants/Hotels.Which I admit I've never had the opportunity. So he asks me if I'd like to be considered for a House keeping position. In his opinion it would enable me to get my foot in the door & after 6 months I could look into being cross trained in other areas of the hotel.

So of course I say yes & I'm asked to wait to meet with Steve who's the House Keeping manager.

So I meet with Steve & we discuss the 3 available house keeping positions a)Room Attendent b)Laundry Attendant and c)Overnight Cleaner

a)I'd be one of the people who clean the rooms, fold the sheets and change the towels while the guests are out of the room b)This is self explanitory;I'd be washing, drying and folding the linens for the rooms c)From the hours of 11pm-7am I'd be vacuming and cleaning the public area of the complex.

Steve commented on my willingness(sp) to learn.Out of interest I asked him how he started off, which was a position similar to what I'm being considered for.As long as I got my foot in the door I wouldn't care.Besides after 6-12 months I could look into cross training & pick up other shifts in different areas of the hotel. So after meeting with Steve I'm asked if I'd like to stick around and meet with the People Resources Director. To which I say yes

I meet with Carrie the PRD,this was a shorter interview.Mainly becaue I've already been interviewed by 2 people beforehand

So there you have it in the space of 2.5-3hrs I had 3 interviews, with 3 different people, with the same company

And some people didn't even get 3 interviews. So I like to think I made a good impression overall otherwise I wouldn't have been asked to stick around for so long meeting these people :thumbs2:

The position I'm REALLY hoping for is the Room Attendant position as it'd be a days and evenings position.Although I won't refuse if offered one of the others.

The positive would be that like I said before, after 6 months I could look into being cross trained in other areas. Thus increasing my experience untill other positions open up

I really must've made a positive impressions.Otherwise I don't see why I'd have been asked to stick around so long.

But damn,3 interviews with the same company in the same day. That's like a record for me :D

Good luck on your endevors. I'd be suprised if they weren't impressed by your willingness to stick around for so long to interview with the diffrent departments.

Dress is important when on an interview.

I know a guy that went on an interview and lost the job to another guy who was dressed more akin to the position. My friend was in a shirt and tie and the other guy in everyday clothes. The job was a vending service tech. My friend was later called in and given the job because the other guy got fired, and told that the other guy was selected first because he "looked like a service tech".

Awesome. Sounds like a positive thing to me.

Back when I was interviewing for a job, in 1997, it was the exception to not meet with 3 to 4 people back to back. I'm guessing it has something to do with my chosen profession.

    Anyhoo, good luck!

    Way to go sir.

May I suggest that you take a firm stance on what you want. Applying for a food position and being told "This isn't for you, try this guy" sounds more like a rejection. If you would have taken the stance that you know you're a good server/host/food-guy/whatever, and you make sure they know that from talking to you, there's no reason why you shouldn't be given the opportunity.

Remember - they're not giving you the benefit of having a job, you're giving them the benefit of having someone willing to do it.
