Good ol' Netflix. Removing the horror movies IN OCTOBER!!!! You would think these idiots would be loading their servers up with every Horror movie imaginable in October. There is no reason why someoen should not be able to watch any Friday the 13th, Halloween, Child's Play, or Nightmare on Elm Street movie on there this month.
Originally, I wanted to start the marathon off with either The Cabin in the Woods or Trick 'R Treat but I got word about The Exorcist on my instant queue that would be taken out in October 1st and I figure I might as well get it over with and that Trick 'R Treat is an inter-library loan that hadn't arrived yet. Also watched The Land Before Time before that. I'm already covered with Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, and Child's Play since I have my copies of these films on DVD. Not sure whether or not I'll have to rent Friday the 13th though.
OH I understand that, as I own them all too, I just think it is pretty bullshit that Netflix doesn't have all of the movies in all of these series readily available to stream. If Blockbuster was still around I could walk into any damn store and rent all of them.
The Lost Boys was on the menu tonight. Another classic & another horror movie that my wife likes now! It's been a long time since I've watched it, but this is still one of my favorite vampire flicks ever. Not sure what we'll watch tomorrow, but we've got a big list.
Double viewing for the day: Child's Play 3: More or less the same as the previous two movies, except Andy is not the target and he must save another kid as well as his life. The side characters were too dumb to live but the barber takes the cake of ridiculousness. 6/10 --- Bride of Chucky: So I guess this is the one that cemented Chucky as this stupid comedic horror character (even more so than Freddy). This movie was so silly I can't find enough words to describe it. It's like it was so self aware that nobody would take it seriously so it went bonkers all the way with the most absurd jokes and ideas that you could do with killer dolls. But holy sh!t what an ending that was! The doll effects were cool and better than the previous movies, especially with two to work with this time, but some CGI effects were so terrible they really stuck out. 8.5/10
Went to my local movie rental store yesterday and finally am going to sit down and watch Halloween and then its on to The Ring. When I return them I'll probably be picking up the Babadook and maybe Halloween 2 if I like the first enough.
Oct. 3- The Adventures of Ichabod Crane, 2 more eps of Mystery Inc. - the old Disney cartoon about sleepy hollow makes Ichabod out to be a jackass. He just stuffs his face & plots to marry the hot chick in town to get at her inheritance. We were cheering for the horseman to kill him! Afterwards we popped in a scene of the horseman being a badass from the live action Sleepy Hollow to help wash the taste out. Animated Ichabod is still kind of a classic, but I seem to have forgotten about everything from it except the scene with the horseman. Also it's very likely there wasn't an actual horseman in it. Probably just Braun pretending. Something else I found- this goes way back to my childhood. Watch the whole thing if you like, but the parts that I'd like to point out feature a live actor playing the magic mirror as he sets up each clip. He talks about how the villain is a very important character & our heroes would be nothing without a worthy opponent to test themselves against. I swear this magic mirror dude had a lasting effect on the way I looked at movies & books after that!
Seed of Chucky: And I thought Bride of Chucky was crazy. I guess I judged too early because this one is even more sillier and ludicrous than anything before. Though for a movie titled "Seed of Chucky" you would think the movie would focus on him/her/it but instead he/she/it got shoved to the sidelines while Chucky and Tiffy took over the movie instead. The comedy in this was so outrageous even Chucky himself aknowledges that no one cares about the main story anymore and drops the soul surf idea entirely and embraces the killer doll shtick to heart. Though the gross out humor was a bit too much at some points. 6/10
Disney's Sleepy Hollow is terrific. Before rewatching it last year, I remembered the rival as a Gaston type and Ichabod as the meek nerd. Then as I watched it, I was shocked when I had it completely wrong. Ichabod is a real dick, a gold-digger, a glutton, all of that. Hell, Bron probably did make a better husband, and the girl probably didn't even deserve him considering she was just as bad as Ichabod. "When papa checks out, he checks in!" had me rolling. I like the old-timey atmosphere of the film. Very comfortable, very pleasant, like a cool, crisp autumn day with a chilly evening around the warmth of the campfire. It was really a campfire tale when it came down to it. And of course, the build-up to the Horseman's arrival is as great as the build-up to Shere Khan, and just like the tiger, the Headless Horseman totally lives up to the hype. He's easily one of Disney's most impressive nightmare fuel characters and worth the long wait.
That's so funny! We made the comparison to Gaston too! The horseman is definitely the best part of it. Love his insane laugh! It's still a classic, but for the whole first half of it we were just wondering how the horseman was going to play into the story at all. Like, this is a love triangle, not a ghost story. But then it all came together during the second half.
Halloween 4 - Great atmosphere, a decent story, and it is quite hilarious to try to see how many times Loomis' scar changes. Oh yeah, and that ending. I give it an 8/10.
Oct. 4- Hotel Transylvania 2 - we've owned the movie for over a year & only now just watched it... But not our blu Ray copy. The one on Netflix. Anyway, we still like part 1 more, but this was a solid, fun little follow up. Can't stand Johnny's family though, but I'm pretty sure that was the intention. Also did another ep of Mystery Inc. - revenge of the man crab
Curse of Chucky: Chucky is scary again! Seriously, this is the darkest of the Child's Play franchise, it's even darker than the first movie with its creepier build up and lack of any goofiness that came in the older movies. Also the ending was an unexpected twist... 8.5/10
GODZILLA (1998) - Been a while since I've watched this one, but I still love it. Unlike most G-fans, I like that he's treated like a real living creature driven by survival instincts & not just some invincible icon. This is the one time where Godzilla had real motivation to be doing everything he does in this movie. The CGI has aged, but it still looks pretty good. And while it's not near as serious as the Legendary movie, it's not as campy as the TOHO ones either. It strikes a decent balance. But I need to buy the blu-Ray. My old vhs copy has just about bit the dust. We could hear weird audio that sounded like distant choopers. I can only guess it's a sign of the tape aging. Everything looks way too grainy on our HDTV anyway. My wife liked it, but still prefers the 2014 one. She liked that Godzilla was the good guy in that one, protecting the Earth from the MUTOs. Also did another ep of Mystery Inc.
Cube: A 1997 movie about a bunch of strangers trapped in a cubic maze trying to get out of while avoiding all sorts of death traps. At first you may think this is just another gorefest / goreporn that relies on the violent ways the characters dying and lacks any sort of development, but that's not how the movie is. Not only the gore is minimum, but the characters are not idiots. They actually think and analyze their situations and find clues on where they are and how to get out like intelligent people which is a rare thing to see in movies of such kind. But do you know the most shocking reveal about it? Spoiler No villains. Yep, there's no guy sitting in a control room taunting the characters or wait for them to get out of their maze, nothing. There's no adversary waiting for them. In fact, they don't tell who's behind all this or how they even got their, and we don't even know what was out there when they got out. So we put our entire focus in the characters that we're following and their struggle to get out alive. If you something like Saw but focuses on the characters and not the violence, you should check this one out. 9/10
Watched Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Both of these Tim Burton-directed films are very solid films complete with great performances, and musical numbers in the latter's case, and some very nice pieces of art direction definitely deserved a watch around Halloween time. Sleepy Hollow in particular is a much better film than I remembered it being several years back.
Oh man, I have a friend that went into a rage when she heard the songs from Burton's Sweeney. Of course, she literally listened to the cd of the stage play version every day in her car. I made the mistake of saying I thought the movie version was just fine...
