Here are a couple pictures of what the engine bay looks like when you get the car from the factory. I know engine bay pictures "exciting" and most people don't know what they are looking at. Anyways I have started taking my car to car shows and the engine bay is a big part of what get judged so I knew this is something I needed to work on. OK the stock color of the engine cover is Silver you can order an additional cover in your car's color for an additional $350 so that didn't happen. Well now that I want to enter in shows I was curious how much it would cost me to get it painted, turns out around $250 but how I wanted it $350. Pictures of the engine cover stock. First I sanded down all the silver to give it some texture and get rid of the shine and added three coats of yellow. I wanted the letters to be black so they would stand out against the yellow background so I had the letters cut out in vinyl. Applied them to the cover and put two coats of clear coat over them. Next I wanted the black to have more of a gloss finish two it so I taped off the yellow put to coats of adhesion promoter and some white primer (so I could see any missing spots when I "Paint it Black"). Next I sanded the primer and washed / prepped it for paint. Then three coats later of a gloss back and one clear coat all the painting was done. Finally I wanted to add some chrome flair to it so I drilled out the fake bolt heads on the cover went to the local hardware store and purchase some real bolts with a chrome finish to them and put them in. Then I had my buddy Roger, laser a chrome plate that said "Transformers Edition" and I bought and LS3 badge and had him laser in "Camaro RS/SS" in that for me. Sorry I don't have any pictures yet of it installed in the car I will post them on Friday. I'm going to pick up a chrome oil cap as will with an Autobot symbol on that, I hope that will not overdue it on the chrome but I'll just have to see. UPDATE!!! 9-16-11 As promised pictures of it installed in the engine bay. I also painted the fuse cover, actually I painted that first to see if the yellow I purchased was going to match the car. If not that would have been a lot cheaper to replace as compared to buying a new engine cover.
I'm definitely not used to seeing any types of car mods on here. I think I remember someone posting a restoration WIP of a VW beetle to look like G1 Bumblebee. Anyway, this came out really nice. It looks factory. Did you use any Krylon brand paints, or the automative kind? p.s. The chrome bolts are a nice touch.
High Heat automotive paint I bought it from Advanced Auto I think it was Dupicolor, don't hold me to that because I'm not 100% on that.
you did a great job, with the paint apps and such and that ls3 emblem looks familiar (emblempro's?) im planning on putting an ls3 in the 71 camaro i am working on currently, i am a huge gearhead, aside from customs. looks great though
I've heard of Alternator customizers using automotive paint. I've always expressed an interest because of certain issues with Krylon. What kind of plastic is the engine cover made out of?
The exact types of plastic I don't know but there were two different types. The silver part of the cover had thinner, stronger type but the black part that was textured was a lot more flexible. The paint worked fine on both types it was an acrylic based paint.
Slick, chief! I used to show my GP, so I know exactly where you're coming from. Let's see some car show pics when it's all done, please!
I will get some pictures on Friday that is the next time I'll be home during daylight hours. It was around $180 plus shipping to him and back. Sure that is in a different thread. Bumble Bee Camaro
Na, I'm going to make the the ROTF Bumble Bee car I've got to get a new front fascia and the SLP hood. That is going to cost me around $3000 after painting and installation. I won't have the money to do that until after the car is paid off.
Nice work, I sold my 1970 SS Camaro 12 years ago. Currently I have a 2001 Audi S4 that is putting down 420 WTQ and 410 WHP on an AWD Dyno. The S4 is a never ending project and is very fun to take to the track and is a real sleeper because most have no clue what they are capable of. Good luck on your car and have fun
Hey, are you planing on putting the revenge of the fallen slyle flood lights on you camaro? Here a photo of the new ZL1 with revenge of the fallen lights:
