I can't think of abandoned by Disney without thinking of that creepypasta, but yeah it makes sense. can't keep those old rides running forever. I'm more sad about Magic Mountain scrapping Colossus this year

Ugh Cars Land....nobody really cares for that Pixar franchise, right? The sequel did badly for a Pixar and the spin off movies (Planes) aren't appealing......what where thinking with Cars anyway? How are new cars (or boats or planes or anything) made without humans? Or is the entire universe someone's imagination?

Obviously you're not an 8 or under boy, as that's who Cars appeals to. My older Nephew (who's almost 4) LOVES Cars. He's obsessed with Mator. He loves it so much my bother (who thinks Disney=Satan) had to convince himself that Pixar wasn't Disney. :lol

Also Cars 2 made over half a billion dollars. And they're making Cars 3.

when my family went a few years back we went to river country it was awesome sure it didn't have any of the huge slides but the lack of chemicals in the water made it so much more relaxing... ironically if it had chemicals they could have kept it open as it turned out Bactria in the water was of a quite nasty sort.

Its also a shame they closed the skyway. That was awesome!

I must admit I don't quite see what the deal is. Yes, Disney abandoned the island, the waterpark, and I guess the skyway, but a little research shows that's mostly out of maintaining its profitability and infrastructure.

River Country was closed in 2001 alongside pretty much everything else Disney in Novermber because of 9/11 and the sharp drop in tourism. However, it wasn't eventually reopened because of problems stemming from its place as the first Disney waterpark that opened in 1976. Between then and its closure, Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach had been built, and the latter alone (according to wikipedia) is roughly four times the size of RC, and the Lagoon isn't that much smaller. Both also have standard mechanical pumping and filtration systems to meet Florida Department of Health standards. River Country, which had used a cost-saving natural method involving sand in the barrier seperating the park pools from Bay Lake, would eventually need to be given a mechanical pumping filtration system because water quality (which the standards give as needing to be potable, drinking water quality by the time it enters guest-useable attractions) could not be garunteed. Because such an expense couldn't be made up by a park that would be operating at a loss due to Disney's other superior parks, the choice was made to just close it.

The Skyway, in Disneyland at least, actually was closed when the tunnel openings in the Matterhorn were found to cause issues with the entire mountain faquade. As the novelty of the ride had long since faded, along with the ride itself being pretty old (it was an imported 1947 model, first of its kind in the US it seems), it was cheaper just to remove the ride. Tokyo Disney and Magic Kingdom followed suit a few years later, probably because of similar ridership decline and maintenance issues. I think most of the stations for the skyway rides have been demolished anyway, so it really isn't "abandoned" IMO.

And Discovery Island? Given it was pretty much a zoo, and two weeks after its closure was the opening of the Animal Kingdom, it was a similar situation to what happened with River Country two years later in that there was no point in operating an extra, inferior park at a loss when the alternatives could more than make up shutting down those operations entirely. As Disney owns the entire county of Bay Lake essentially, it was cheaper to just leave the island attraction to rot until something new could use the land there.

Not surprised, those live action shows can only last so long after the franchise they're part of falls out of public view. The last IJ film was anything but a revitalization of the franchise it needed to stay profitable and really, does anybody actually care that much about American Idol anymore now that there's a zillion "talent search" shows these days? I'm surprised such a thing lasted as long.

LMA is probably a maintanance nightmare, as if just one of those vehicles doesn't perform exactly as it should, things don't end happily ever after. It might could survive if they heavily theme it to Cars, but I think it's more a matter of real estate again, as putting rides down where the stadium is now would hold more guests.

Don't know anything about a 'backstage tour' though, and Wikipedia's got nothing on it that I can find.

You're overthinking it about how the Cars/Planes world can exist without humans, bud, just repeat the MST3K mantra and you'll be fine :)

However, while I don't doubt Cars 2 was setting any records, the franchise itself is running gangbusters for Disney in terms of toy sales. It's like their Hot Wheels, almost. Plus, it's already a concept similar to the Autotopia pre-shows with the Marathon cars (unless they stopped sponsoring that ride and were removed, I haven't been to a Disney park in years) and kids love the crap out of anthropomorphized vehicles anyway (I.E. Thomas the Tank Engine is still currently the best selling young children's toy franchise in the world).

That, and Cars Land already exists at the California Adventure location and must have been a roaring success for them to consider copy-pasting it to Florida.

Funny thing about jones is it was only going to be a two year show!

Maybe it will get replaced by the jones ride at disneyland?

Yup my nephew loves cars as well. It's big with kids. Here is the disneyland cars land if you want to see what it would look like.

The money Disney brings they could'nt spend to have a filter system installed.

    A lot of reasons.
Chief among them would be the logistics of dismantling a Water Park... it's not like in Rollercoaster Tycoon where you can just click and delete elements at will, you have to bring Construction vehicles in and River Country doesn't sit somewhere where you want Construction Vehicles making a lot of noise at all hours of the day; Nearby Fort Wilderness, a busy Camping resort... I think the Tourists might Object... Same goes for Discovery Island, unfortunately.

And you couldn't just bring River Country Back, It would have to be completely brought up to code which means disconnecting it from the Lake, Emptying the pools and swimming holes, repairing Thirteen years of Hurricane damage, Connecting the site to a Municipal source (Florida Legislature prohibits the use of Standing water for entertainment purposes) and at the end of the day it wouldn't be worth it since River Country is much smaller than the other Water Parks at Walt Disney World.

Oh, Disney could have afforded it easily. That's not the problem.

The problem is that it's a terrible investment as the park just wouldn't be able to bring in more cash than was spent on it.

Disney got away with it in RC and the island namely because they actually own the entire county. As long as they're not public health hazards, they sort of control the whole area.

    Indeed.

THe water park got its unfiltered water from Bay Lake, new rules came into effect that you needed treated water in water parks, it cost too much money to make the changes especially with them opening up two rather larger water parks Typhoon lagoon and something else whose name is escaping me

I've heard a lot about these abandoned attractions.

I love that YT Channel, and the video. Very thought provoking and creepy.

I went to River Country once. Compared to Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon, it just didn't hold up. Disney saw the writing on the wall, and built BB to replace River Country while increasing water park capacity. I'm heading there tomorrow. ;)
