I'd gladly take a stylized gaia to help her transform and pose better. Maybe reduce the wings to 2 or something, I dunno. I don't design TFs

Sadly this isn't a UT-inspired figure. It's pretty-clear they are taking different inspirations from comics / other artistic works, rather than anything from UT. As it stands, it seems as though FansHobby and Transform & RollOut are the only ones making anything new from UT. Shame. Would have liked the TR-02 treatment on Cybertron Primus.

Man, you're not wrong. Initially I was kinda excited for this, but the more I look at it compared to the other designs, the words plain do not do it justice. It truly does look like the most uniform generic default bot I have seen. Maybe if the city parts were different shapes/sizes and had minor details like the buildings on the fingertips it might be different, but yeah, there truly is nothing discerning or unique about this figure whatsoever.

Agreed, that figure would be a complete nightmare. She would need a complete redesign to look even halfway decent.

As long as the wings are all attached in a way that they hold up their own weight without sagging, and the feet large enough to balance well, it wouldn't be too bad. And I'm not opposed to shell-formers when it's in service of a cool robot mode

I just really hope that they have some easter eggs like how the original toy had iacon and kaon

Given how painfully bland and uninteresting the robot mode design is, an A+ Cybertron mode is the only thing that I feel could possibly save this. Honestly it would be embarrassing if this ended up having less planetary detail than the original.

It's definitely unfair to compare this to Cybertron Primus when this isn't trying to replicate it. That was a new design for a planet transformer, this is a copy-paste of their Unicron's engineering. The planet mode won't be great because its engineering is designed around repeated symmetrical part use. Don't expect too much from this

I mean Regardless of the reasons for lack of details or sacrifices, a Masterpiece $300-$400 figure should not have lower expectations than a mainline toy from 16 years ago.

How is this a copy-and-paste of their Unicron's engineering? It doesn't look like their Unicron, the panels aren't in the same places, what am I missing?

The torso is the big giveaway, the front and the back are the same.

you’re not missing anything. Beyond using similar transformation ideas to their Unicron, it’s a completely new mold with differently working limbs.

Similar engineering ideas =\= copy and pasted. The legs are new engineering for sure and so are the arms. Not a single surface is shared between the two either, It’s a completely new mold and should be treated as such.

Ah, perhaps you're right. In that case I'm even more disappointed in this. They made a completely new mold for a Primus and actively chose to design it after the ultimate guide version? What a waste

I'm confused as well. I'm thinking EXTREMELY hardcore fans are disappointed...while AVERAGE fans like it? I'm going to lump myself into the AVERAGE category :D

I'm still trying to figure out why the engineering design would affect whether the shell is detailed or not?

If it's designed like Unicron where it's a lot of mirrored or identical panels, it's reasonable to expect the planet mode to have weird repeating greeble patterns

That would then be due to an aesthetic choice, not engineering design. They could make the same engineering choices but still have uniquely designed shell parts that provide differing details.
