The worst part: She wants to eat it. When KA's wife was in labor, someone made a comment about cold placenta sandwiches, and I thought it was disgusting then. Well, it still is.
True story: When my first son was born a few years ago, several of our friends were due within a couple of months of each other. My wife and her friends all saved their placentas to compare after all of them had finished giving birth. It was really mostly a curiousity I think, to see who had calcium deposits or that sort of thing. So we just put it in a baggie and tossed it in the freezer for a couple of months. Not long after, she called me and asked me to thaw out a steak in the freezer. And you can see where this is going... Yup. I thawed out the placenta and very nearly cooked it. She came home and caught the mistake in time, thank God. We have not saved the placenta with any of our other births.
I've seen placentas. Eating that shit would be nasty. Also, I'm not aware of any medical benefit at all.
All I know is that dogs and cats eat the placentas when they birth their litters. But they also eat the ones that are still born.
Damn. I'm a vegetarian, that isn't offended by meat (just don't like it), and I find the idea VERY disgusting. Uh, your BABY came out of that thing. WHY the **** would you want to eat the placenta? Well, rabbits will eat ALL of their young if they feel scared or threatened. I saw a pet rabbit I had EAT her young. I'll never forget it.
