However, I was stuck on Camshaft for the longest time. There's not much art available of the guy, and he's really only had one proper non-repainted toy, and that was in G1. So, I set out to decide what I was going to do for this guy. The best "classics" style art available for him is this: My first thought is his head looked very Optimus Prime-ish, and specifically like the Armada Deluxe Prime, so I settled on that head. Beyond that I thought the two most iconic features he had were the windshield chest, as well as the back cannon. I kicked around some ideas with board member ServO for a while, such as using the classics Drift / Blurr mold or Kup due the ability to have a chest window, but neither option really grabbed me. Then at BotCon last year I saw the custom Camshaft that Brunkion76 had created. The design choice intrigued me, and finally these past two weeks I decided to try my hand at my own version. My Camshaft is comprised largely of the same parts as Brunkion76 used. The base is obviously DotM Jolt, and I Dremeled the ball and head off of a Deluxe Armada Prime. The shoulders come from a Prime Knockout, and the rest of the arms are from a RTS Tracks, just like Brunkion76. His back-mounted cannon was created using the crane gun from TFTM Longarm figure. I attached a long 5mm peg created from silly straws, and attached that to the gun using JB Weld. The gun is pretty great because it can peg into the existing hole in DotM Jolt's back and angle to create the "back cannon" effect, or be placed in his hand as a BFG. The other key to this figure was the windshield chest, as I noted previously. Although DotM Jolt doesn't feature a windshield chest, I noticed early on that it could be faked using paint. That portion of his chest is recessed by design in the mold, providing further definition for the faux windshield. Now, in execution I don't think it's a perfect "Classics" Camshaft. I gave him a fancy silver paint job because quite honestly a Chevy Volt doesn't fit the sexy sportscar alt-mode the Omnibots need. In addition, I think that changing up some of the detailing to accentuate the faux windshield chest might have made him look more like Camshaft, but I'm not sure I care. I like the look of the black skirting around the car in vehicle mode, and the black torso and waist look very nice to me. I almost get more of a "knight in armor" feel from him, which is cool in and of itself. At any rate, I've posted images below. I'm almost done other than touch-ups, but any feedback or suggestions will be taken into account and may cause me to make additional changes. Thanks! Finally glad to have this one off my plate!
Kinda wished I didn't pass up on DotM Jolt so many times... it's a great idea, and I've a spare Armada Deluxe Prime as well as a Tracks/Wheeljack IIRC... =/
Man you really nailed it! This is an awesome representation of Camshaft...everything just works! The head, the arms, the paint...top notch my friend! The trio look stunning together! You've gotta be really pleased with how this turned out.
I've called DOTM Jolt, Camshaft on my shelf ever since I first got him, great to see him painted up all purdy with a new noggin. Brilliantly done
I never noticed that.... I mean, totally intentional! Nope. Off the shelf spray paint, combined with some hand painting. In this case the Chevy logos, eyes, wheel rims, and front of the grill were all hand painted. Everything else is spray paint. Final pics of the bot and car mode are below!
