Ok, so a few of you guys have already seen this custom over in Creative GD, but I wanted to go ahead and post a project thread here. I rarely post "WIP" threads (I really don't do a whole lot that warrants such), but I didn't want to derail bellpeppers' thread any longer. While I'm at it, major props to bp for being so hospitable with his discussion thread there. I probably wouldn't have posted this otherwise. So, I just gotta admit that while I'm not the biggest "movieverse" fan, I'm certainly not a h8r either, as I enjoy the lines quite a bit. There are some figures that really shine for me, and one of those is 2007 Landmine . Many of the movie toys that had cameos at best or not even screen appearances I ended up liking the best. However, when the 2 pack of Optimus Prime and Comettor came out, it was a pass for me as I already bought HftD voyager Prime and of course Landmine. I admitted when I first saw them that $17 for a voyager+deluxe is a great deal, but one only has so many resources when new stuff hits, right? When Wal*mart clearanced them down to $13 and Hasbro gave us the $5 off coupon, I didn't hesitate. Clearance prices and a coupon spawned this idea for me. I figured I wanted to make a Beachcomber that could hang with my Classics, but also one that still has a bit of that movie look to it. If Hasbro makes another "Classics" Beachcomber down the line, I'll get that and just be happy I made a cool custom. Win-win for Quaddy bellpeppers' thread really got me moving on getting a head for this guy, though, as I had literally done everything but the head. I customize Alternators and Binal Tech figures mainly still, so my supply of heads for deluxes is low. SMOG suggested the PCC head here, and I have been thrilled with his choice! Sure enough, I found this gem on clearance at my local Walmart: Double Clutch with Rallybots - Transformers Power Core Combiners - TFW2005 I took the he PCC Combiner head, and modded it to fit: and simply added sculpting putty and shaved/sanded it down for his "flattop": So, is this the "perfect 'Classics' Beachcomber"? Hardly. Again, I just have to admit my own biases here that I really adore the Landmine mold. It's simply an awesome little toy. "Why not use a scout, Quaddy?" Well, I want my "Minibots" characters to have deluxe-sized molds. It's my one gripe with the RtS Windcharger. I do agree that the mold is on the tall side a bit, but it's a really slender mold, and that's one reason I like it for my Beachcomber. Also, the "earphones" came from the Comettor head, as I just cut them off of the sides, then filed them down just a bit. This has been more of a whimsical project for me, as I have been working on other projects and this one was "to keep me fresh". As I got that Prime/Comettor set really cheap and thought, "Hey, I could make a Beachcomber out of that since that mold rocks!" A few weeks later, and here I am. I'm really not random when it comes to this portion of my hobby, but sometimes a little bit of randomness keeps me goin' So, basically, what I have left is that I want to paint the head and call it done. However, I've been going back and forth a bit on the silver portions on the fronts of the legs. A part of me wants them blue for robot mode, and another part of me wants them silver for the alt mode. Also, I'm going back and forth on the rollbars. I may paint 'em flat black or leave 'em. At any rate, I hope you enjoy what I have here Thanks for lookin' I'll have this thread opened in just a bit
It's all coming together very nicely man. Looks like one of Don's TF re-designs from the early IDW ongoing
Looking good! Glad you solved your head dilema! Gonna have to get some of that putty. Looks better than my apoxie for small stuff like this. Paint job looks fantastic too. My only suggestion is that the cannon seems a bit too hardass for beachcomber. Maybe put a peace sign back there or put a flower in it or something!
The legends one fits my collecting needs, but as a dlx size one if what you're after, then you've nailed it here! The head came out great! It should look amazing once it's all painted up!
Great work SQ! He is looking awesome and his size will be perfect with the deluxe cars and leader... leaders.
Nice to see. Back at the customs and this one of your finest works bud. My only gripe would be for a classics stand in he might need some more classics like hands (wonders if drifts hands would fit) But your paint job is fantastic and the head sculpt is absolutely perfect . Anyone would be proud to have this on the shelf
